The construction of the new intersection at HW1A and HW22 just on the west of Cochrane is not easy to navigate on a bike. Narrow, single lanes with a short climb if westbound and heavy vehicle traffic. There're several Calgary brevet routes that go this way and there's not really an alternative route so worth taking into account and using caution, etc.
Cheers,
Matt

Sure there is. And I think we should change any brevet that goes through Cochrane.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51058071

  • Turn left at the lights at Centre Ave
  • Cross the tracks and turn right at Railway St
  • Follow Railway St as it turns into Glenbow Dr and then Quigley Dr after Highway 22
  • Turn right at the railway level crossing bike/ped path at Horse Creek Rd (Range Road 44)
  • Turn left at Highway 1A or continue on Horse Creek Rd as the brevet dictates
You could access this route through Gleneagles if you wanted to jump on a bike path for a few hundred metres. This will work going west or east.

That's almost exactly what I did on the Nordic Center 200 2 weeks ago instead of dealing with that mess of construction. I found it to be quite nice compared with the normal traffic around cowboy trail even before the construction.

One more thing I would add about the route that goes out the 1A, is the section between ghost lake and Morley seems like it has become more busy on weekends and there isn't much of a shoulder at all. It's a bit hit and miss, but definetly not the nicest if the timing is wrong. I suspect it's much more pleasent during the week if you have the luxury. Would recommend bright blinky light. Ride safe!

Years ago, maybe about ten, a property owner out on 1A said the Province had already expropriated land from her son’s ranch to level and straighten  hwy 1A through the Reserve.  Perhaps that construction is still pending and will affect brevet routes in the future.
