I'm planning to do one or more Brevet Events this season and these events are new to me.  A couple questions I have for clarification on the website rules are:
1 - Do qualifying rides have to be on Brevet Event dates, or if we follow the registration notification a proof submission can we pick any date?
2 - Proof clarification: public Strava record meets the requirements (no additional proof required)

My idea is to do a 200 route and pick my own date if allowed and then join one of the posted events for a 300 route. Thanks in advance!

I'm not an authority here, just a rider, but I had asked similarly in the past and received this:
- Before the date of the ride, no permission needed.
- You’ve got a week after the date to complete the ride.
- If you need more time, just email for permission.

I find these helpful given everyone has time commitments, and especially with the variability of Alberta's weather.

It it still a requirement to carry and use your brevet card marking the times you pass through the checkpoints (and having the safety information on you).

Hi Rans - it's also worth noting that members can ride any brevet that's in the database on any day(see website), and get a credit for it as a Permanent (same rules on the day). You won't get a homologation number from Audax Club Parisienne against that brevet ride, but it will be in the results section of our website (Permanents). Official homologation numbers are definitely required to qualify for Paris-Brest-Paris (next one's in 2027...) but I think it's fair to say that some of the North American grand randonees may accept Permanents for qualification. Talking of rules, we are working on a rule update based on the latest from ACP - just need to get our illustrious prez to review and sign off...Cheers - Matt

Sorry - the question around submitting a GPS tracking link is addressed in the rule update!

Erik,
There is a number of points that need to be clarified before your question can be answered.
1. The difference between a qualifying Brevet and a permanent Brevet.

A qualifying Brevet is a scheduled ride that is accompanied by an homolgation number issued by Paris.  Homolagation number are required by clubs that offer 1200 km events like PBP, VanIsle 1200 etc.

A permanent Brevet is any ride completed on the database outside the scheduled rides.  For instance,  if the Starlite 200 was not on the schedule but you choose to do it, the club would post it as a permanent, your time would be recorded but would not be eligible for a homolgation number by Paris. The rides schedule the AR executive submits to Paris in November for the upcoming season. Only these rides are eligible for homolagation.

2.  When is a ride deemed a qualifying or a permanent?

For most randonneur clubs, the schedule is set in stone, you ride the scheduled ride on the date and time, and if completed within the time limit you get your credits or homolagation number.  If you ride the scheduled before the date or after the date, it becomes a permanent. Very restrictive!

How the AB Randonneurs run our club.  We want people to ride and understand people also have lives, our schedule doesn’t always match with rider’s lives.  After a ride our Paris rep in Calgary submits the results to Paris and homolagation numbers are issued, usually done on Sunday or Monday after the weekend event. So, riding before the date is not an issue because the rep has the results and submits the rides ridden before and scheduled times.

Riding a ride after the date?  As mentioned earlier most clubs would just turn it into a permanent.  But the AB Randonneurs want people to get their credits so we modify the rules.  You can still get your credits and ride after the date by delaying when results are submitted to Paris.  Hence, why you need permission to ride after the date and not before. Permission to ride after the date is sent to the President (me) and I delay the rep sending in the results till the ride is completed.
I believe that answers question one.

Question two:  Recent rule changes ( just this year) we can now use GPS, Strava, RWGPS as prove of completion for rides.    It used to be Brevet cards ONLY!  The AB Randonneurs we’ve been accepting GPS results for a number of years, we set it up during COVID, since getting store people to sign cards as proof was not acceptable.  We’ve been a head of the curve.

A little long winded hopefully it explains things better.

On another note, newbie here, I was hoping that there would be an opportunity to ride as a group. Do you ever do rides where all members attend at the same time and at least to a degree, ride together?

Thanks,

This is all helpful.
As of yet, I don't have interest in the longer ones and PBP, so for me, complying with the "lesser" set of rules is sufficient.  I think I've learned one time how those work and how to comply efficiently.
We'll see over time if that changes to expand to the longer rides.  Right now I prefer full nights of sleep as any sleep deprivation is from kids, and I'm not shopping around for more of it ; )
God bless the French for having rules as a national output!

Thank you everyone, lots of information!

If I follow the registration and any required notification and provide proof of completing one of the 200km routes then I am eligible to ride a 300km for Alberta Randonneurs (no specific date needed for the ride). Is this correct?

Renee
