Move to Amend Grassroots Campaign News...

Ilene Singer and Broward County

In Ohio, State Representatives Kent Smith and Nickie Antonio introduced a draft resolution calling for Congress to take action on a 28th Amendment to end corporate constitutional rights and money as speech. The resolution (which hasn't been assigned a number) is identical to a state Senate resolution (SR 187), which was introduced in 2015.

"Only human beings are legal persons with constitutional rights. Corporations are not people," said Rep. Smith at a press conference announcing their cosponsorship. "I believe it goes without saying that when the founding fathers wrote the First Amendment they were concerned with the rights of John Doe the individual, not John Doe’s Land Speculation and Investment Company."

Elsewhere in Ohio, residents in South Euclid and Shaker Heights will get to vote on Move to Amend resolutions on election day. Shaker Heights is set to vote on Issue 95 and Cleveland voters will vote in their next election. Move to Amend volunteers were successful in collecting 605 valid signatures on a initiative petition that led to the South Euclid City Council to put Issue 2 on the ballot. In Cleveland, volunteers submitted 8,906 signatures on their petition, well over the 5,000 required for formal consideration by the Cleveland City Council.

“Simply reversing Citizens United, or even overturning the 1976 Supreme Court decision that first equated money with free speech rights, leaves in place other tools corporations have corrupted to assert their rights over those of actual people—namely the 4th, 5th and 14th Amendments," said Cleveland Heights resident Greg Coleridge of Ohio Move to Amend. "Only by denying corporations legal personhood can We the People (re)gain the authentic right to decide what takes place in our communities, nation and world.”

The upcoming votes follow a similar ballot measure passed last March in Toledo, which became the largest city in Ohio to approve a Move to Amend ballot measure and established an annual Democracy Day to evaluate the . More than 700 communities across the country, including over 20 in Ohio, have adopted resolutions or ballot measures calling for a constitutional amendment..

➤➤ Congratulations to all our Ohio volunteers for their all their great work in these ballot campaigns! THANK YOU!!

Cobb_podium_2.jpgIn California, the campaign to pass Proposition 59, the Overturn Citizens United Act, is heating up! Prop. 59 is a voter instruction which directs California’s congressional delegation to support a 28th Amendment to make clear corporations do not have the same rights as people and that money is not equal to speech.

Move to Amend has partnered with several local and national organizations to pass Proposition 59, including Money Out Voters In and Common Cause California. Move to Amend affiliates across California have been campaigning tirelessly writing letters to the editors, reaching out to local and state organizations for their support, and spreading the word through public events and phone-banking to get out the vote.

The measure has been endorsed by many local and national organizations such as the Latino Voters League, the California Labor Federation, and the American Sustainable Business Council. The California Democratic and Green Parties are among several political parties to support Prop. 59 along with several local and national candidates and public officials, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and the presidential campaign of Dr. Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka.

Kaitlin speakingIn Washington state, citizens in the state of Washington will have the opportunity to vote on Initiative 735, a ballot measure calling for Washington’s congressional representatives to amend the Constitution to end corporate constitutional rights and money as speech.

Initiative 735 has received support from many local and national organizations including the Sierra Club, labor unions and many pro democracy groups. At least fifteen city councils have passed resolutions against Citizens United and many members of the state legislature, congressional delegation and other public officials have also voiced their support, including Governor Jay Inslee.

“I-735 represents an amazing opportunity for voters in Washington to add their voices to the growing movement of people rejecting the excessive influence of big corporations in politics and demanding genuine democracy of, by, and for We the People, not wealthy interests,” said Move to Amend National Director Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap.

For more than 3 years, the WAmend coalition has led a tremendous campaign to reach the November ballot. Last December, over 1200 volunteers gathered over 330,000 petition signatures for I-735. With less than a week before the election, they are going strong with an expansive get-out-the-vote campaign to pass the measure.

In Wisconsin, local residents in 19 communities will vote on resolutions to join the movement to amend the U.S. Constitution.

Voters will cast ballots in support of a constitutional amendment to make clear corporations are not people and money is not speech in Rock County, Reedsburg, Manitowoc, Delafield, Neshkoro, New Glarus, Spring Valley, Osceola, Mt. Horeb, Monticello, Milltown, Clayton and the towns of New Glarus, Harris, Springdale, Decatur, Mount Pleasant, Cadiz and Lake Tomahawk.

If all vote in favor, this will bring to 97 the total number of Wisconsin communities that have called for the "We the People" amendment to 97. Currently, over 40% of Wisconsin residents -- or roughly 2.4 million people -- live in jurisdictions that have passed Move to Amend resolutions.

We are seeking bright, energetic folks to join our team as interns this Spring. Interns can either work out of the new office space in Sacramento, CA, or telecommute from anywhere in the United States.

  • Communications Intern to assist with a range of communications activities and projects, which include generating media coverage, sending email alerts to activists, responding to inquiries, writing persuasive blog posts and op-eds, participating in online social networks, and developing communications and campaign strategies.

  • Legislative & Lobbying Intern assists with state and national legislative support and lobbying projects. Activities include researching and tracking state and federal legislation; assisting with public relations by compiling information for Move to Amend's website, database, and grant proposals; attending hearings and briefings; and writing blog posts, summaries and memorandums.  Interns are expected to remain informed on current legislative affairs and daily news events.
