Dear colleagues,

I hope this email finds you well.

Together with Tommaso Pacetti, Chiara Biscarini, Natasha Carmi, and Jeltsje Kemerink-Seyoum, we are editing a Special Issue on "Water Management in Times of Disasters and Conflicts", on iScience.

This Special Issue focuses on the challenges and approaches mobilized to address the management of water during and after disasters and conflicts, including conflict prevention. The impacts of extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, natural hazards such as earthquakes, and the reverberating and foreseeable effects of armed conflicts and forced displacement increasingly threaten water security and increase injustices in water distributions in many places around the world.

If you want to know more, please check https://www.cell.com/iscience/home, and feel free to be in touch with us for information.

Relevant sub-topics include (but are not limited to):
  • Water governance and emergency planning in disasters
  • Water governance and conflict Nexus, including conflict prevention
  • Water diplomacy and its role in fostering cooperation, resolving conflicts, and supporting sustainable water resource management
  • Protection of water infrastructure in times of conflicts
  • International Legal frameworks for times of disaster and conflicts
  • Integration of humanitarian, development, and peace (HDP nexus) perspectives in water management
  • Water quality issues resulting from conflicts and disaster and strategies for mitigation and remediation
  • Rapid restoration of water supply and sanitation systems after an emergency
  • Sustainable WASH services for refugee and displaced populations as well as the host communities
  • Innovations and improvisations in water infrastructure to nurture resilience, and community-led and indigenous approaches to water management in and after crises
  • Cross-border water resource challenges and approaches related to conflicts
  • Cross-cutting initiatives that link ecosystem restoration, technology innovation, local knowledge, and inclusive governance to improve water security and resilience
Do you think your research fits the scope of the special issue? If so, we encourage you to discuss with our editor, Camilla Imarisio (c.ima...@cell.com) or submit your paper today.

The deadline for submission is September 30th, 2026. Apologies for cross-posting.
With best regards,
Giulio Castelli
