Dear colleagues,

Are you working in recently deglaciated landscapes or on glacier retreat? Then we would love to hear your key scientific knowledge gaps in deglaciating landscapes from a hydrological perspecive in our BeyondIceFutures survey: https://www.soscisurvey.de/beyond_icefutures/

In our “BeyondIceFutures” project, funded as a synthesis activity by the Mountain Research Initiative, we integrate multidisciplinary scientific, stakeholder and practitioners’ perspectives to identify key knowledge gaps, as well as current and potential nature’s services to people (NCPs) in recently deglaciated landscapes. Thereby, we want to formulate attractive visions and guidelines to achieve positive ‘beyond ice’ futures. In our global survey among scientists we collect opinions and ideas across biology, climatology, ecology, environmental science, geomorphology, glaciology, hydrology, political ecology and soil science.

Survey participants can apply to join us for a follow up workshop from 1-3 October 2026 at Innsbruck University Center in the Austrian Alps. Here, we will synthesize survey and workshop outcomes in a peer-reviewed paper and a brochure for stakeholders, practitioners and policy makers.

We look forward to hear your key knowledge gaps!

Anaïs Zimmer, Arnaud Temme, Michele Freppaz and Jana Eichel
