The Department of Engineering (DE) of University of Ferrara UNIFE (Italy) is announcing a PhD research fellowship position, affiliated to the Hydraulic Engineering group, for a period of appointment of three years.

The implementation of sediment transport monitoring plan at the Po River (Italy) is in collaboration with Regional Agency for the Environment (ARPAE) and the Po River Agency (AIPO). The overall objective is to develop and transfer knowledge towards a less cost and time intensive as well as towards a more reliable method to measure suspended sediment transport as well bed load transport in the River Po. This is paramount for Agencies to the design and management of river restoration measures as foreseen in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) “River Po restoration”.

The task of the PhD position will be the characterization of dunes and bed load by using the Multibeam system and the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. These methods will be developed and tested at the Po River and the Hydraulic Laboratory (LIDR) of the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) of the University of Bologna – UNIBO, Italy. The appropriate candidate is willing to work in the field at the Po River, and at laboratory LIDR.

The PhD candidate is expected to work under the co-tutelle of DE-UNIFE and DICAM-UNIBO.

The position requires a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on hydraulic engineering, but other similar and relevant backgrounds will be considered. The position further requires a good background in river hydraulics and sediment transport. It will be an advantage with knowledge in fields like soil mechanics, acoustic signal processing, data analysis and statistics.
Good knowledge of English is also required. Inclination for exchange and travel, and knowledge of Italian are considered important due to the need to communicate with local staff and other interest groups worldwide. The project will involve mainly field and laboratory work so field/laboratory experience will be an advantage.

Applications received before June the 30th 2023 will be given full consideration.

Accommodation in Ferrara at student gest-house (single room with private bathroom and shared facilities) is possible.
