📑 About the speakers

Radars, raingauges and radar–raingauge combination system of MeteoSwissDr. Ioannis Sideris
Dr. Ioannis Sideris was born in Greece and got his bachelor’s in Physics from the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki. He continued his studies in USA where he earned his Master’s and PhD in Astrophysics. His main research has been on theory of chaos, galactic dynamics, stochastic processes, and the N-body problem. He continued his career in the Northern Illinois University where he was involved in research on beam dynamics and accelerator physics in association with Fermi Lab. Then, he moved to the Department of Computational Astrophysics in the University of Zurich. Currently he is a scientific collaborator in MeteoSwiss Locarno, where he works with the radar team on research and operational implementation of applications related to quantitative precipitation estimation. He is the author  of CombiPrecip (radar-raingauge precipitation combination) and NowPrecip (precipitation nowcasting system). He has authored a number of scientific papers and has given several talks on scientific topics of a variety of fields.

NowPrecip: Precipitation nowcasting in the complex terrain of SwitzerlandDr. Athanasios Ntoumos
Dr. Athanasios Ntoumos was born in Greece and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He earned his Master’s degree at the University of Lille (France) and completed his PhD at the Cyprus Institute, where his research focused on climate modelling and regional climate projections of heat extremes. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory at EPFL, working in collaboration with the radar team at MeteoSwiss. His work focuses on the development and verification of CombiPrecip (a radar–raingauge precipitation combination system) and NowPrecip (a precipitation nowcasting system), as well as the operational implementation of NowPrecip2 ensemble forecasts.

We look forward to seeing many of you there! Please, do not hesitate to share this announcement with potential interested colleagues.

Best regards,
Young Hydrological Society of Greece
