A two-year PostDoc position on “Bias correction of CPM simulations over Italy” is open at Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori, Pavia, Italy.

How to apply(in Italian): https://titulus-iusspavia.cineca.it/albo/viewer?view=files%2F000296930-IUSSCLE-fe73df37-6242-4809-97ee-7a132dcc7077-000.pdf
Application website:

Deadline for application: 8 July 2024, 12:00 pm Rome time

Project description:
The PostDoc candidate will work on the Convection Permitting (CoPe) project. CoPe aims to create a validated and reliable dataset of Convection-Permitting Model (CPM) simulations over Italy, for both past and future time slices, which can therefore be used as basis for the development of climate impact indices in support of effective adaptation strategies. In particular, intense precipitation, temperature and wind from an ensemble of CPM simulations will be compared to observations, high-resolution reanalysis products and the driving Regional Climate Models (RCMs). To serve as input into impact models, climate variables need to be bias-corrected. The bias-correction methods will span from the standard quantile mapping and equidistant cumulative distribution function to machine learning techniques. Special focus will lie on approaches that take into account the role of orography and the non-stationarity of the biases in the climate change context.

Candidate profile:
We are looking for a very motivated and passionate candidate, with a team working attitude and a background in climate modelling and/or statistical analysis with large datasets. A good experience in machine learning and/or bias correction, statistics and probability, along with good programming skills is required. Experience with CPMs simulations and the analysis of the climate change signal and associated uncertainty in climate variables time series will be an added value. Research abilities demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications on highly ranked international journals are desirable.

The candidate will be based at the CARISMA research centre of
Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori, Pavia. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the research team and actively participate to bi-weekly meetings for sharing results and open discussion.
