Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 18th Annual InterPore Meeting – InterPore2026, which will take place 19–22 May 2026 in Nantes, France. InterPore brings together researchers from around the world working on all aspects of porous media science, including energy, climate, hydrology, materials, biology, and more.

As part of the conference, we warmly encourage you to submit an abstract to the minisymposium:

MS04 – Biological Processes in Porous Media

Lead Organizer
Na Liu – University of Bergen, Norway

Co-Organizers
• Chaojie Cheng – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany
• David Landa Marban – NORCE, Norway
• Eike Marie Thaysen – CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), Spain

Microbial processes are central to the structure and function of natural and engineered porous systems such as soils, reservoirs, and water treatment facilities. Improving our understanding of microbial interactions in porous media requires advances in characterizing key processes including biofilm formation, microbial motility, metabolism, and biogeochemical reactions.

This minisymposium aims to highlight new developments and challenges in understanding microbial processes in both shallow and deep subsurface environments. We welcome interdisciplinary research contributions addressing microbial processes in water and porous media. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  1. Biofilm formation – dynamics, structure, function, and impact on porous media; relevance for water quality, groundwater systems, geological gas storage, and wastewater treatment

  2. Biogeochemical reactions – microbial processes that influence nutrient and contaminant transport

  3. Microbial risks in subsurface gas storage – including microbial gas loss, bioclogging, and corrosion related to storage of CO₂ and hydrogen

  4. Novel biotechnology for environmental applications – biofiltration, water treatment, and remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater
