Session Description:
The multiscale interactions between physical and chemical heterogeneity and microbial processes in subsurface porous media play a critical role in solute mixing and reaction processes, with significant implications for environmental applications. Accurately characterizing these complex processes necessitates the development of novel experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches.
This session aims to discuss the coupled dynamics of mixing, reaction, and microbial processes within subsurface environments, where the interplay of physical, chemical, and biological factors gives rise to non-linear behaviors that govern solute transport, microbial activity, and reactive processes across scales. We broadly invite contributions that present new modeling, laboratory, and field-scale studies that advance the study of mixing, reaction, and microbial processes. Examples include quantifying mixing and reaction dynamics, such as reaction hotspots and hot moments or anomalous chemical transport, as well as estimating and characterizing biofilm hydrodynamics, clogging, biomineralization, bacterial behavior, and coupling across processes/scales.
