Colleagues
If you are attending the Dushanbe Conference, you are warmly invited to participate in the Forum -
The holistic approach to water – conjunctive use & management of groundwater & surface water

Description of the Forum: Background, rationale and objectives
:

In most regions, but also in Central Asia, with the impacts of climate change, population growth, and economic development, global water resources are diminishing, exacerbating a recurring water crisis. In response to development needs, countries are increasingly prioritizing the development, utilization, and protection of water resources in national and transnational rivers, through the NEXUS approach. This is also the case in the Syr Darya & Amu Darya, which both drain to the Aral Sea. However, unless coordinated in the NEXUS approach, efforts can result in sectoral conflicts and tensions such as irrigation vs hydropower vs municipal demands. In transboundary river basins, primarily due to water scarcity, these situations become more complex, when some important (but ‘hidden’ resources), such as aquifers are not included fully addressed. If un attended, such conflicts can escalate the economic, environmental, and other negatives. Addressing the evolving challenges of water resource management conflicts requires a multifaceted approach, including conjunctive management of all water resources. Further, the role of the youth and women cannot be ignored. There is a need to incentivise the professional growth of young experts in these fields and to engage with the organisations involved with governance of water.
