Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to share a pre-announcement for Session 5. Advances in remote-sensing tools and data driven methods for understanding hydrological processes at CMWR 2026 (https://cmwrconference.org/), to be held in Bologna, Italy, June 28–July 2, 2026.

Remote sensing and data-driven approaches are revolutionizing hydrology. From soil moisture and snow dynamics to surface and groundwater interactions, new observational capabilities and computational methods are opening unprecedented opportunities to study the terrestrial water cycle across scales.

Session 5 brings together cutting-edge research that leverages multi-sensor remote-sensing data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data assimilation to improve the monitoring, quantification, and understanding of hydrological states and fluxes. Emphasis is placed on multi-scale, multi-variable, and integrated approaches that enable data-driven discovery, enhance process understanding, and reduce uncertainty in hydrological estimates.

We invite contributions addressing, but not limited to:

  • Integration of multi-source and multi-sensor remote-sensing datasets
  • Machine learning and AI for hydrological process understanding
  • Data assimilation frameworks for water and energy fluxes
  • Observations and modeling of soil moisture, snow, surface water, and groundwater
  • Uncertainty quantification and reduction in remote-sensing–based hydrology
  • Data-driven insights into complex hydrological processes across scales

This session aims to foster cross-disciplinary exchange between hydrologists, remote-sensing scientists, and data scientists working at the forefront of hydrological research.

    Session organizers:
Manuela Girotto, UC Berkeley, Ben Livneh, UC Boulder, Chrisitan Massari, CNR

Further details on the conference can be found here: https://cmwrconference.org/Call for abstracts will be announced once the submission portal opens. In the meantime, we encourage you to consider this session for presenting your work and to share this pre-announcement within your networks.

We look forward to engaging with the community and seeing you in Bologna!

    Best regards,
Manuela Girotto, UC Berkeley, Ben Livneh, UC Boulder, Chrisitan Massari, CNR
