Greetings, fellow outreach and bookmobile folks!

I am in charge of the collection on our bookmobile and am wondering if you would be willing to share the collection development and weeding policies/processes you have in place for your collections?

I have connected with some libraries whose collections are determined by selectors who are stationed in the brick-and-mortar branches, but we are set up a bit differently. I am the Outreach Librarian at my library, and I am the selector for what we call our Mobile Branch.

I have determined the seed collection but am now looking to the future and would love to see the documents that you all have in place for selecting and weeding.

Thanks so much, and I look very forward to seeing what you all share!

With gratitude,
Megan Freeman

Hi Megan,

Our library system works similarly, as I, along with our Outreach collection specialist, perform our own collection development as well.

I generally use the formal system-wide policies but also am allowed leeway in ordering materials for our specialty population.    I am the selector of all materials, and we have a robust McNaughton account for our print books, as well as accounts for "regular" ordering for Juv/Teen/Adult.    We have two proformas set up with Cengage/Thorndike/Gale, and utilize their standing order program, as well as operate a librarian's choice plan.  I get most of my AV from Midwest now, as I did have a large  a DVD subscription plan with Baker and Taylor—but alas, it is over.

I also have a separate Playaway plan with money for Playaway's, launchpads and wonderbooks.  We are still on the fence about Whazoodles.  (I don't get it.)

Overall, we have an Outreach collection of around 100K items.  Our collection is a mix of  print (Juvenile/Teen Collections are a mix of large print , graphics and "regular"; whereas our Adult print collection is mostly large print) and non-print, material including DVDs, CDs, AudioBooks, LaunchPads, WonderBooks, Stem Kits, hotspots, etc.  We do not have magazines in our collection but frequently borrow from branches. '

All ORP material (Print and non-print) circulate for 6 weeks (event our hotspots) ach materials, and all check out for 6 weeks.

Hope this helps,
Tameka
