1. Contemporary Issues in Aboriginal Health Care with Dr. Kent Saylor
and Dr. Gregory Brass

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 from 6-8pm at Strathcona Anatomy &
Dentistry M1 Building
This lecture is being held in conjunction with the McGill
Interprofessional Global Health Course. The course coordinators have
made a special exception for this week's lecture to open participation
to anyone interested.

Description:
Aboriginal health is a highly relevant concern to the health care
community. Aboriginal patients will be encountered by most Canadian
health care practitioners at some point in their practice. Such
encounters may range from the daily to the infrequent; from the urban
specialist required to communicate the management of a complex disease
via translator to an Aboriginal patient flown in from a remote
location, to the urban community health physician providing perinatal
instruction to a young Aboriginal family, to the rural family
physician who practices close to an Aboriginal community. Aboriginal
peoples require culturally appropriate health care. This lecture aims
to develop medical students’ sensitivities to the complex and unique
issues affecting the health of this population, which historically has
not received the same commitment to health services as the general
population. The ability to appreciate diversity, challenge prejudice,
analyze the forces that shape society, and to be able to function in a
range of circumstances, are important skills for future physicians.
Goals of this lecture include: improved relationships between medical
student/physician and Aboriginal individuals, familiarity with key
areas of morbidity and mortality in Aboriginal populations,
recognition of the important roles of family and community, and
respect of traditional medicines and healers.

It will be a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal Health
status in Canada and the efforts made to improve the health of our
peoples. If anyone is interested, they can find more information on
our website. They can also email myself or any of the coordinators at
mcgillg...@gmail.com for more information.

2. Call for presentations for "The Meeting Place: Truth and
Reconciliation Toronto 2012"

The event will be held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel, Toronto from May
31-June 2, 2012. It is a joint initiative of Toronto Council Fire
Native Cultural Centre, the Living Into Right Relations Circle-Toronto
Conference of the United Church of Canada, Canadian Roots Exchange,
and the Centre for Aboriginal Initiatives at the University of
Toronto, in support of the work of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission.

At this time, we are soliciting proposals for interactive workshops on
themes that should be of interest to NAMHR members: history, race
relations, healing, youth, education, and reconciliation. A website
for the event is in progress and proposals may be sent to
trctoro...@gmail.com.

If interested, please email ahig....@gmail.com and we can send you
the pdf attachment explaining more about how to submit a proposal! (It
just couldn't be uploaded to this google group)
