1. Predeparture training: Cultural competency in Aboriginal Health --
last chance to register!

** May 8th 5pm-8:30pm** Only a few spots left!!

For the past 2 years, the Aboriginal Health Interest Group has
organized an evening-long workshop for students interested in learning
more about Aboriginal culture and how it impacts our work with
indigenous patients. Originally designed for students going to
Aboriginal communities for pre-clinical or clinical rotations, we have
found the teaching to be useful for any student working in a health
profession, even right here in Montreal.

Medical students from every University, nursing students, other health
care students and other interested individuals are welcome.

The training will take place at Thomson House, McGill University, on
May 8th, from 5 to 8.30pm. Dinner will be served.

We are asking for a 10$ contribution. You will receive 5$ back on the
day of the event.

SYNOPSIS
Featuring groundbreaking footage from seven winters in the Arctic,
People of a Feather takes you through time into the world of Inuit on
the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay. Connecting past present and future
is a unique cultural relationship with the eider duck. Eider down, the
warmest feather in the world, allows both Inuit and bird to survive
harsh Arctic winters. Recreations of traditional life are juxtaposed
with modern life in Sanikiluaq, as both people and eiders face the
challenges posed by changing sea ice and ocean currents disrupted by
the massive hydroelectric dams powering eastern North America. The
eyes of a remote subsistence culture challenge the world to find
energy solutions that work with the seasons of our hydrological cycle.

"For a movie that starts off talking about ducks, People of a Feather
ends up negotiating nothing less than man’s place, and our role, in
the entire life cycle. It’s an undeniably elegant feat, and one that
could very well reframe the way you live the rest of your life."

Kwé, Kuei, Hi!!!

3. NATIVE ART • CULTURE evening; Music, performing arts (open mics)

Thursday May 3rd starting at 21h.
At Café-bar l’Escalier; 552, Saint-Catherine East Street

For this occasion, the NATIVE ART • CULTURE evening is the opportunity
to enjoy some of the First Nations, Quebec and Rwandan talents.

This evening, we are collaborating with the event SONGS OF MOURNING,
SONGS OF LIFE. This project was organized by Engrenage Noir/ LEVIER
and Les productions Onishka. It is an intercultural exchange that is
just as artistic as it is emotional. We will observe the colonization
effects of the Rwandese and First Nations people that have been left
behind and the role of art in their individual and collective healing
process. It is in this context that we will be able to watch Groupe
Ihozo`s performance. This dance company presents traditional and folk
Rwandese dances. It is the fruit of the initiative of young (7-35
years old) talented dancers, motivated to discover the expression of
the rich Rwandese culture.
IHOZO: a name to remember, a band to discover!

But this is just the first part of the show. We will then have a show
by DJ Madeskimo. He will present electronic music with crazy beats,
eclectic synthetic sounds, and samples from different areas- which
include the one he is originated from- the big North. Geronimo Inutiq,
also known as DJ Madeskimo, has showcased at the Vancouver Olympic
Games and has had many appearances on The TV channel APTN. He will
present a mix of his pre-taped beats accompanied by a live acoustic
performance. He makes music instinctively. He wants to speak about
what brings the human race together, because he believes we must be
united in this world.

Geronimo Inutiq will not perform alone; he is collaborating with
Michel Poulain, a video Jockey also known as, VJ Athanore. He owns
Athanore studio.
This conceptual art studio works in Quebec and in the Americas in the
field of video, photography, and VJing. The studio has produced many
photography, video and multimedia projects. Athanore has participated
in many successful visual variety concepts, has presented its visual
exploration, multimedia shows and has presented workshops at events
around the world: in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere in the Americas.
Athanore is also developing a field of research, exploration in
collaborative creation, training on sustainable development in media
arts and research projects in visual anthropology.

It is with great pride that we offer you this 4-act program. Because
as well as enjoying the performances of our 3 invited talents, we are
offering you an extra collaboration: yours. The evening will end with
a musical Jam so bring your instruments!

4. Volunteer a half day to hang out with indigenous youths -- May 18
and/or 20: Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp

You may have already received this email – in which case please see
corrected activity breakdown below in red. If you are receiving this
for the first time, please consider volunteering for these terrific
outreach activities, described below. (Please feel free to forward to
anyone you think would be interested/able to participate).

Dear Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp Volunteers,

Thank you very much for offering to volunteer your time for this
year's Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp (http://www.mcgill.ca/fph/
programs-services/eagle-spirit-high-performance-camp). The camp, run
by McGill's First Peoples' House, invites young Aboriginal student
athletes from communities across Canada to spend the weekend at
McGill. During this weekend, the students participate in a variety of
academic, sports and leadership activities. As you can imagine, many
volunteers are needed to facilitate the various activities, and to
ensure that the students get the most out of their experience at
McGill.

As part of this year's camp, the students will spend one morning in
the Simulation Center and one morning in the Anatomy Lab. In both
cases, we will need several medical student volunteers to facilitate
these sessions. The exact time of the sessions, the number of
volunteers needed and a link to the doodle poll where you can sign up
is outlined below.

We ask that you kindly visit the doodle poll (by clicking the link
below) and pick one or both of these sessions. We also ask that you
please leave a comment on the polling page (the 'comment' link is
available on the polling page, directly below the choice of sessions)
indicating whether you have a particular preference regarding the
station/activity that you would like to facilitate (see below). Every
effort will be made to honour these requests.

Again, on behalf of the Office of Admissions, Equity and Diversity, as
well as First Peoples' House, we thank you very much for offering your
valuable time. We look forward to seeing you at the camp!
