The First Peoples Studies Program at Concordia University presents a
public lecture by

(Mohawk Elder)
"And Grandma Said: Iroquois Teachings as Passed Down Through the Oral
Tradition"
Thomas R. Porter (Sakokwenionkwas-“The One Who Wins”), a member of the
Bear Clan of the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne, is the founder, director,
and spiritual leader of the traditional Mohawk Community of
Kanatsiohare:ke. He has been a nationally recognized and respected
leader for many years, has authored many publications about Mohawk
traditions, and has won several awards including an Honorary Doctorate
from Trent University. A champion for the revitalization of Native
languages and traditions, this respected elder has devoted his life to
educating Native and non-Native people about the true history,
culture, and spirituality of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). With
heartfelt sincerity, tears, and laughter, in his book, “And Grandma
Said: Iroquois Teachings as Passed Down Through the Oral Tradition,”
Tom describes the tragic effects of colonization on his people and
shares the teachings passed down to him from his grandmother.
