Teen Mental Health First Aid, or tMHFA, is an evidence-based training program for students in grades 10-12 that teaches the skills to recognize and aid their peers experiencing mental health and substance use challenges and crises, including how to quickly get the help of an adult. The Maya Gold Foundation believes the teen Mental Health First Aid training is an invaluable resource for teens, especially during these difficult times. We are currently able to offer this training to high schools and youth groups at no-cost thanks to our partnership with HealthAlliance Hospitals and Westchester Medical Center health Network. Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, health and human service workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course covers common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. The Foundation is funded entirely by donations and grants, and all donations go towards programs and services. All administrative overhead is covered by a single donor family. All Directors and Advisers work on a volunteer basis, and all funds go to programs supporting youth. The Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) charity, and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
