ESRC funded PhD
opportunities in the area of Energy and Climate Change
– deadline 7th February

You may be aware
that the University of Aberdeen is a member of the ESRC
Scottish Doctoral Training Centre, which is part of a
wider doctoral training network known as the Scottish
Graduate School of Social Science (http://www.socsciscotland.ac.uk/).

This allows us to nominate candidates for ESRC
studentships in disciplines across the social sciences.

There is a deadline
approaching to nominate students for a number of
pathways. All the pathways are listed on the above
weblink, but of particular interest to the Energy Theme
is the interdisciplinary area of ‘Environment, Climate
Change and Energy’.  Dr  Jillian Anable is the
UoA convener (j.an...@abdn.ac.uk)

If you have any
prospective students you would like to nominate with a
proposal in this area, the process would be as follows:

Application
Procedure
To be considered
for nomination by the University of Aberdeen to the ESRC
SGS-DTC, the candidate must:

1) Contact the
relevant pathway representative – in this case Dr
Jillian Anable (j.an...@abdn.ac.uk)

2) Contact the
prospective supervisor in UoA – this can be from any
discipline, but these are esrc funded studentships so
the topic area must have a predominantly social science
slant with at least one supervisor from a social science
discipline.

3) Apply for a
place at the University of Aberdeen at
www.abdn.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply
- stating 'ESRC' in the 'Intended Source of Funding'
section (if using the downloadable form) or 'Name of
Proposed Supervisor' section (if applying online).

All of the above
must be undertaken no later than
Thursday 7 February 2013.[note – this is our
internal deadline to be able to assess the applicants
and decide on which to take forward.]

If the pathway
representative and relevant colleagues deem the
candidate to be suitable for nomination, they will be
informed by Thursday 21 February as they will need to
register as a nominee using the ESRC SGS-DTC's online
portal no later than Friday 22 February.

Thereafter, they
will have until Friday 8 March to complete their
application for consideration. This will be reviewed by
the pathway representatives from all relevant
universities in the ESRC SGS-DTC, including Aberdeen.

Guidance
regarding the application process following receipt of
confirmation of nomination can be found at

www.socsciscotland.ac.uk/studentships/guidance_notes_for_pathway,_aqm_and_open_competitions
