Hello folks,
(I was directed to this list by Alan Carter)

My name is Joshua, I moved to Aberdeenshire 18 months ago and currently live in Meiklemill, Ellon. I have a handkerchief-sized garden that I've filled with raised beds to grow salad/cooking greens (see attached photo). I'm keen to meet up with other growers and permaculturists in and around Ellon to meet up, chat and share ideas.

Get in touch :)

Joshua,

I don't think we're near Ellon but we have a few acres West of Turriff and pretend to do permaculture. We grow veg and are busy planting fruit (grafting local apples) and pine/bladder/heart/butter/hazel/sweetchest- nuts and have dreams of restoring our watermill, we pump our water with a mini waterwheel. We also don't run a car which makes us unique in rural Aberdeenshire, (we have studded bike tyres for winter). We heat and cook on wood. We're an occasional WWOOF host too.

There is a local forum called the roundhouse: http://www.theroundhouseforum.co.uk/

and NEEPS: http://neeps.myfreeforum.org/index.php

They organise occasional meetups although things have gone quiet recently.

Max

Hi Joshua

We're in Pitmedden, so not too far from Ellon. I'm another permaculture pretender although many of the things we grow are annuals.
Would you like to come and visit?

All best

Steve

There is also a young Permaculture North Scotland facebook group. 97 members so far....
I try to keep the membership local to North Scotland to keep the focus on the North.

Hi, sorry nowhere near Ellon but over near Aberchirder. We have a 3 acre plot and have been permaculturists for over 25 years. We started & I run the Roundhouse forum which is a quiet, but friendly and focussed forum with nice, non-confrontational members if you need help or want to share what you know. We've organised group buying and time share events in the past but the lack of close proximity was a bit of a dampener to be honest. Always keen to build links between like minded folks so will help whenever possible.
Julie :)

Hi Jake

Interesting to read your hedge laying article. I've had a go at that. I find it odd that it doesn’t seem to have been part of traditional hedge management in these parts. Now that the hedges are trimmed by machine we just get the useless hedges that look like lollypops - with massive gaps at the base and a scanty top.
I do find it hard to make the cut to the right thickness though and sometimes end up cutting right through the trunk with my machete. (not the traditional tool I know - a souvenir from Jamaica).

Steve

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for the kind replies. I'll try to get in touch with you individually but don't hold your breath. At the moment every spare moment goes into my vegetables: Sowing, transplanting, harvesting. And into learning to drive. I've been a cyclist forever, but now I want to be able to move large amounts of compost!

It's nice to know you're all out there! All the best,

Joshua

Know that feeling :) I expect the rest of us do too, it's manic at this time of year. Once you start making your presence known you'll be surprised how many permaculture people in your area you'll find, far more who don't belong to groups and forums are out there.
Good luck, Julie
