McMasterCarr Supply Company is a private American supplier of hardware, tools, raw materials, industrial materials, and maintenance equipment. The company was founded in 1901 and is based in Elmhurst, Illinois, with distribution centers in Robbinsville, New Jersey; Santa Fe Springs, California; Douglasville, Georgia and Aurora, Ohio.[2][3]
The company was founded in 1901 at 160 East Lake street in Chicago as the McMaster-Davis Supply Company.[4][5] Starting with $50,000 in investor capital, its founders were T.J. McMaster, a former stationary engineer, and F.C. Davis, who had been a chief engineer in the U.S. Navy.[4][6] In 1904, an attorney with a background in mechanical engineering named Walter S. Carr purchased the company.[7] As early as 1908, the name of the company had been changed from McMaster-Davis to McMaster-Carr.[8][9]
In 1908 the company printed and copyrighted its first catalog, at 506 pages in length.[11][9] It releases its current catalog annually.[12] The distinctive yellow print edition of the catalog is limited in distribution, sent primarily to established customers.[13]
McMaster-Carr's website ranked third among e-commerce sites in a 2002 study performed at Stanford University about trust and credibility, just behind Amazon and Barnes & Noble.[14] The site intersperses design tips and explanations of material properties within product offerings.
When working on larger projects, I might place multiple McMaster orders over the course of a week or month. Highlighting the top parts of an order in the subject line is going to help me sort through order notifications more quickly.
I kept trying to get the printed catalog but kept failing. They were too expensive on eBay. Luckily, I found a 1995 catalog at a used bookstore for only $3 with my student discount. I bought it just for the nostalgia.
I love mcmaster carr. Always fast. The first time i ordered from them was in the middle of the night, in the morning a pickup was in the driveway dropping off my order. After realizing it is a home business they starting using regular shipping.
My friend orders almost everyday and must spend tens of thousands. He has a pile of catalogs. He always has the latest. I have never been able to get one. I think it has to with the amount you spend. He also orders over phone, maybe that helps.
Many of you will no doubt be familiar with the McMaster-Carr catalog of parts and supplies. They carry over 550,000 items ranging from screws and bolts up through pretty much any industrial part you can think of including lasers.
If anyone has a need for a hard to find fastener, please let me know. For 10 years or more I ran a store on the side specializing in these products as well as mil spec and other exotics like silicon bronze, monel, navel brass, 316 stainless etc. Some examples of strange threads include the gun sizes, m24-1.0, 3"-5, 1 -12, etc. I once had 100 class 12 foundation bolts custom made and individually tested for strength compliance in 1 week for use in the Chicago Spire project.
Really!? The elusiveness of their catalogs is legendary. New ones go on eBay for $40 - 50. Even old ones are auctioned. Why would anyone pay $50 for one when they could "...just call or use the web to request one"?
MSCDirect's catalog is much easier to get and I think it is much larger, just an FYI. Price-wise they are about the same, have a number of warehouses - I get my stuff from both McM and MSC next day with UPS ground. MSC's website is much worse compared to McM's
In the past few decades, a peculiar and distinctive psychology has emerged in England. Gone are the civility, sturdy independence, and admirable stoicism that carried the English through the war years . It has been replaced by a constant whine of excuses, complaints, and special pleading. The collapse of the British character has been as swift and complete as the collapse of British power.
