Asida Shakryl: "Abkhazia's Executive Authorities' Self-Isolation Policy Cannot But Cause Concern"

Ekho Kavkaza | Vitaly Sharia ― The Human Rights Ombudsman of Abkhazia, Asida Shakryl, has addressed Parliament with her final report in this position. In it, she criticized the authorities for their self-isolation policy and called the statement by the Foreign Minister regarding the harm caused by the activities of non-governmental organizations an attempt to move towards authoritarianism and a revision of the constitution. The outgoing Ombudsman also emphasized that she is concerned about the "persistent work" of the State Security Service and the Ministry of Justice in promoting the law on "foreign agents."

Human Rights Commissioner Presents Annual Report to Parliament

The Human Rights Commissioner, Asida Shakryl, presented her annual report to Parliament on the activities of her office in 2022. In her report, Shakryl did not focus on systemic human rights violations, which had been addressed in previous reports for 2018-2019, 2020, and 2021. Instead, she highlighted violations that had not been addressed by executive and legislative bodies despite her recommendations.

Ruslan Khashig: "The Statements of Koba Kobaladze are Absolute Lies"

Ruslan Khashig read these comments on the Ekho of the Caucasus website and wondered why, three decades later, Mr. Kobaladze needed to say such a thing when the whole of Abkhazia knew it to be untrue. He expressed his desire to speak out on the issue, stating that: "The statements of Koba Kobaladze in an interview with Ekho Kavkaza do not correspond to reality. This is an absolute lie. I can state this with full responsibility as a journalist, as a person who knows and remembers the events of those days in March 1993 well. I not only saw and heard it, we have video evidence confirming the exact opposite. In March 1993, the Georgian side did not hand over a single prisoner of war or the bodies of the dead to the Abkhaz side, despite negotiations between the Abkhaz authorities and the authorities of Tbilisi and the Georgian military for over a week. Media reports and interviews are kept in our archive. Every day they promised the Abkhaz side that the bodies of the dead would be handed over tomorrow, but the next day they came up with new problems. This continued from 18 March to 24 March 1993."

Abkhazia Expects Another Successful Tourist Season with Record Numbers
