Hello,

I am doing research into developing a business/entrepreneurial model which could be used to scale the distribution of BSF filters by others. So far in my research I've only found two groups who are doing something along these lines -- Aqua Clara Kenya and the Safe Water Project (by Enviro-Stewards) in S Sudan. Customers pay either the full or subsidized cost for the filter. Local entrepreneurs build the filters. Community Health Workers educate the community on the importance of drinking safe water to avoid water borne sicknesses, make a business case for investing in the BSF filter, and earn a commission from the sale. The idea is that this model is self sustaining.

I am looking for examples of others who are using this model and how effective it has been.

thanks,  ...Dave

Dear Dave,

In Ethiopia only Abraham Bezabeh who is a social entrepreneur  sells BSF with subsidize price! You can in touch with him to discuss his model I cc him in this conversation! Accessing a filter with affordable price is a huge challenge in Ethiopia and I am really looking forward to learn from  the research findings.

Warm Regards,

Martha

Hi Dave

We started up filter production through local entrepreneurs back in 2000 – that was in Machakos, Kenya, and I think they are still going. That was a subsidized project for only the first year, after which they produced and sold filters for sale with a small profit.

Another project you might find interesting is the one that Tearfund did some years back in Afghanistan – attached the CAWST summary on that. I have more in-depth documents I can share with you if interested.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

Sorry for the late reply.

You may find additional information on BSF implementers business models on our website : https://www.biosandfilters.info/implementation-approaches

And attached is a brochure giving some example of market-based approaches for HWTS.

Best,

Catherine

Before the final version of the brochure goes out, please note that the family in the picture is from South Sudan (they are South Sudanese not Ugandans).

Also, folks may find a link to the TEDx talk about the project of assistance.  Thanks

Kind regards,

Bruce
