FrontPagewas replaced in 2006 by Microsoft Expression Web and SharePoint Designer, later also discontinued, but apparently Microsoft Office continues to faithfullyinstall it to this very day.I can testify that these keys are still present in Office 2019.They are to be found in all manual uninstall instructions for Office.

I have found more traces of Netscape, this time in ASP.NET.I found on my computer the filesC:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\Browsers\netscape.browserandC:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\Browsers\netscape.browser.A ".browser" file is used by ASP.NET to detect the installedbrowser type and define its capabilities for displaying Web page content. This means that ASP.NET, to this day, is still checking if the Netscapebrowser is being used (!).

The only application that would ever read key this would be Netscape, but Office installs it regardless of whether Netscape is installed, because if you install Office first, then Netscape second, the registration would be missing and the user would have to run the "Repair" option of the office install.

First of all Thank you for Firefox It's a great browser But not the best. Hands down the best browser of all time Is Netscape navigator It is dearly missed And very loved. So my question and comment is Have you thought maybe about bringing back Netscape Back. I know Firefox Is your main product But Firefox was based on Netscape And the original Netscape was just incredible. At least in my opinion I think that if you Work on a project to revive the old navigator It might actually get a positive response. I would love to hear your opinion

I'm with you on this. I would be open to a vastly updated Netscape browser. I remember thinking when Windows Vista came out that Netscape should call its next version "Netscape Vista." Even though Windows Vista isn't a thing anymore I think releasing a highly capable Netscape browser, possibly still called "Netscape Vista," could attract a lot of attention.

BTW; that's why this cannot be used for browser detection. Browser detection is a BAD practice and you should always avoid it where possible. Do feature detection instead. But if anybody insists on this; they should use the userAgent property instead.

UPDATE 1: According to Compatibility Changes; IE11 now also returns "Netscape" for navigator.appName property, to reflect the HTML5 standard and to match behavior of other browsers. Also see changes in userAgent string here... More on feature detection here...

This was debated on the mozilla newsgroups ages ago and it was decidedthat navigator.appName should return 'Netscape' even in mozilla sinceif that were to be changed every page out on the web that uses somebrowser sniffing code (and that's a HUGE part of the current web)would need to recognize mozilla, and that just won't happen andthere's no reason to do that either since mozilla == netscape ==mozilla as far as content developers are conserned [sic].

In November 1994, Mosaic Communications Corporation, Andreessen's and Clark's company which also owned the original Mosaic browser, was renamed to Netscape Communications Corporation, as the NCSA approved the Netscape name more than the original Mosaic name; the Mosaic browser would continue to use its original until its discontinuation in 1997. Mosaic Netscape would subsequently be called Netscape Navigator before its official release.

Netscape 6 was released on November 14, 2000, which removed the "navigator" brand altogether. The browser was now based on Mozilla Suite, which includes various things like a sidebar, integrated search, privacy, and more.

Netscape would remove the numbered version on the branding for the browser with version 8 only, mow simply known as Netscape Browser, with version 8.0 releasing on May 19, 2005. It added features like password auto-fill. Netscape was now based off of Mozilla Firefox, essentially acting as a rebranded version of it.

Now being developed in-house once more, the "navigator" brand was reintroduced with version 9. Netscape Navigator 9 would release on October 15, 2007, which included more compatibility with Firefox.
