Reading Brown's comments in the P&J this morning, I couldn't agree more. We need a complete transformation of the side going in to next season. I'm not talking about papering over the cracks either - more so root and branch changes.

For far too long, we've had players in our team, who have made it there from the youth ranks. Most of these guys got their place out of pure necessity rather than merit. I'm talking the likes of Foster, Diamond, Considine, Mackie, Young, to name but a few. Only now are we seeing some semi-reasonable youngsters coming through who you could say would hold their own (Jack, Fyvie, Pawlett).

I'd comprehensively ditch the guys that have been with us for a while, and have the tag of 'also ran'. So, don't offer deals and/or transfer list:

Diamond (totally failed to live up to his early promise)
Langfield (far too inconsistent)
Considine (he's a Kilmarnock/Hamilton/St Mirren player at best - but not of the quality we need)
Young (nowhere near good enough for a top 3 challenge)
Foster (please don't come back)
Mackie (do I need to explain)
Maguire (effective at times but not a team player and has designs above his station)
Hartley (his legs have gone)
MacNamee (too injury prone and too old now)
Vujadinovic (ability doesn't meet his wage demands)
Aluko (petulant and only plays when he wants to - one good game in five is nowhere near good enough)

I would keep and build around the following:

Fyvie, Pawlett, Jack, Vernon and offer deals to Milsom and Smith..... it's as bad as that in my book.

We’re gonna need more than 6 players to compete next season though! ;-)

Thoroughly expected yesterday but still disappointing. I left at 3-0 as I feared more tbh.

Odd leaving Chinky at centre back – says a lot about Vujawotsit huh?

Agree with all your comments except possibly Aluko and Maguire. Injury free seasons for either could see them scoring goals and be sold on in January for a decent fee.

The rest we might have to pay to go away!

I agree with both "gaffers" - We need a massive personnel change (most likely with another 'transition' season) but I'd keep Aluko and Maguire as well. They both have ability, but their heads are fragile - in a confident, good side, they would flourish, IMO. I think a team with Aluko, Maguire and Pawlett all on song and fit would scare the crap out of most SPL defences.

Add Fyvie, Jack, Milsom, Folly (remember him?) and Vernon (on form) and that's a decent start.

What we need to change wholesale is the defence. Here, I agree with Rory. The only one I'd keep is Smith - and that's if he can improve his fitness with a full pre-season with us. Otherwise, new keeper and 3/4 of a back four. And can at least one of them be an inspirational, driving force captain, please? Hartley's not bad at those bits, but his legs have indeed gone and we can't carry a passenger in midfield.

Langfield may well survive - tbh, there are any better keepers in the SPL with the exception of McGregor. Maguire hasn't proved worthy of the big deal he'll be looking for - one season out of how many at AFC?

Aluko maybe, but he's too hot and cold, and I truly think he wants to be elsewhere.

Milsom, Smith I'd definitely keep, and Vernon should get a new deal now. Hartley should stay, as I think AFC will see him as good coaching material, and an eventual replacement for Craig Brown.

As for now, time so see more of the young lads. Long-time senior players are part of a culture of failure, and its time to move awau from that.

The simple question I always use as a yardstick to measure the worth of our players, is.... if you saw them playing in a similar role, and of a similar level, for opposition teams - would you like to go and make a bid for them?

Maguire, on certains days - perhaps. Aluko based on some of his trickery, defo. But they are far too inconsistent and do not (to me at least, looking in from the outside) appear to have the right mentality - a winning mentality. Maguire and Aluko both seem to have too much self interest in making themselves look good. Aluko has never been the same player since his Nigeria affair. Maguire - as I mentioned - is a billy big time and really needs to stay grounded. He thinks he's a big shot since his goal for Scotland from the half way line.... although I blame his agent in filling his head with complete sh*te.
Langfield - too many cockups in my book.... good shot stopper at times, but look at yesterday - simple shot by Stokes and he spooned it into a dangerous area of the box, where we were lucky a Celtic player wasn't poaching.

Folly looks solid, and I'm not sure if he's here for another season? If not, I'd like to keep him as his attitude is spot on. McArdle I forgot to mention.... no better than Considine or Diamond in my opinion. Think he's contracted for a season more, so keep him as back up to two, far more experienced and better centre halves. Magennis - be as well keep him - doubt he's on much. Not a terrific player and doesn't look like he is a natural at scoring goals. Not sure what else he brings to the party.

To be honest, I expected slightly more from Brown and I'm really disappointed with the way the season has panned out. However, with so many players out of contract and the injuries that built up (notably to Folly), it came as no surprise that some players just didn't give a crap.

I'd like Brown to get guys in that will actually give 100% for the shirt - look at the way Kenny Dalglish has changed the attitude of Liverpool players. Guys like Diamond, Foster, Mackie, Young, Considine... they are natural born losers. They have been associated with, and entrenched in, a losing side and now have losing mentalities because of that. Foster may well end up with a gong to show for his efforts, but he's not good enough in any shape or form. His years with us simply prove my point.

Some guy on one of the forums (AFC Chat) has been bleating on about how Milne is giving Brown loads of money this pre-season.... I think that smells of bull to be honest. WIll be happy to be proved wrong, but realistically, history points to another conclusion. We don't need superstars, nor guys who command a silly wage that they could get from Championship. But we need fighters, guys with self belief and a team spirit. We need experience and players that who have a never say die attitude. 8/10's of our current rabble have none of the above.

Over to you wiggless.....

i wouldnt keep any of Diamond Considine Langfield Mackie or Young,
based on the fact they are common denominators in this club that have
been here far too long. Can you imagine the message if Brown started
telling players like Considine and Mackie they can go when they have
time left on their contracts. ould shake the place up in an instant. I
think it is telling that only Aluko and Maguire have been offered
deals. I dont think Brown wants the likes of zander and like me will
be happy when he is playing for hearts. Next season cant come quick
enough and i need a long close season with no tournaments to distract
before the usual blind optimism kicks in again!!

Aluko hasnt been offered a deal.  He is in papers today asking for a deal though.

Maguire offered deal purely because we have to in order to get compensation.  If we didn't we would get no compo.

Millsom was the other offered a deal but he unsurprisingly turned it down and pity for AFC as he could well have made us some money if we managed to get him to sign on longer deal.

The likes of Considine and Mackie will be here next season unless someone else is willing to pay them the money they are on here which is unlikely but overall nobody out of contract from the players who have been here long term that would be badly missed anyway.
