I was wondering what views the list has on the current situation.

Personally, I don’t want them to go to the wall (although I enjoy the threat of it).  I enjoy Aberdeen v Rangers games too much.  However, I am really glad that things have come to a head and that drastic measures will be required because I can see this as a real leveller.  Spending will be reigned in meaning the transfer budgets/wages will fall, and hopefully an exodus of their better players, resulting in a team that is less likely to be 15pts clear of third place every February, and with limited means to change that scenario for significant time.  I am hoping competitiveness of the SPL is increased.

Celtic (as much as they deny it) need Rangers.  Without them, the potential for a one horse raise every season may see boring and impact their ability to sign “star” players, and they may see a negative impact.

As long as Rangers don’t go to the wall completely, I can see this as being a benefit to Scottish football.

I agree. There's already a petition on change.org to use this opportunity to reform the SPL such that the OF duopoly of voting rights and TV money can be ended. Could be a watershed for Scottish football.

Rangers go bust, Celtic head to England and Scottish football will be improved at a stroke. It may take time to recover financially, but it will become competitive. Would realistically expect us, Hearts, Hibs, United, Motherwell and Killie to challenge for the title.

Got to disagree  I’m afraid.   Rangers have basically used money that should have been paid in tax to pay for extra/better quality players.   Effectively they’ve cheated the other clubs in Scottish football during the course of the past 11 years (and that’s the tax dodges we know about) as well as the taxpayer.

In reality I suspect that the Huns have been guilty for tax evasion for far longer than this and have potentially cheated AFC out of the league title on a few occasions in the early 90s.  On that basis alone I hope they go to the wall.   Cheats shouldn’t prosper.

Say what you like about the Donalds and Milne (and as most of you know I have and will) at least they haven’t cheated by spending money that was someone elses.

Final thought on this though, again is this an example of how the British model of club ownership ie allowing an individual complete control, is a poor model for running a football club.  Surely its time that the SPL/SFL looked at the German model of 50%+1 of club shares being held by the supporters.  With the exception of some of the former DDR teams who no longer had support from state organisations its rare to hear of German clubs failing financially so surely there’s a lesson there for us.

Cheers,

Ewan

Absolutely Ewan. They've signed players with money withheld from the Revenue. Other clubs - ourselves included - have tried to live within their means, and have fulfilled their statutory obligations. Seems Rangers have wilfully withheld tax and it seems HMRC are likely to play hardball at last with football clubs. Its a time of austerity where the poor are suffering - recovery of taxation can't be allowed to be set aside.

Looks shockingly bad for them. Did read Graham Spiers saying administration has been a certainty for months, but that liquidation now a 50%+ chance. If they lose their tax case, surely a certainty.

Neil.

See Whyte is away tae France:

It's possibly a shrewd masterplan by him appointing the people he wanted to restructure the club as its administrators.

To me it looks like they won't win anything this year but could be out of administration in the summer and back in Europe with still the 2nd strongest squad in Scotland next season.

Unless HMRC really dig their heels in and demand all the money nothing will change.
