Firstly, leadership has the ability to influence the behaviors,
thoughts and attitudes of people, co-worker or employees. Leaders tend
to see set goals in short term and long term intervals and because of
that, they set a direction for the rest of the team to apply
themselves towards. A leader must be able to to express their vision
and commit to it. The leader must
lead by example, so they must be passionate. Without a leader a team
will degenarate into arguement and conflict, because not one person
thinks alike, so each person will have different views on the same
aspect. The leader must be able to choose the best ideas to act upon to
lead the team into the same direction, toward the goal smoothly and
efficiently.

June 2009, Question 6 (c)

(c) Explain the role and importance of leadership in a team
situation.
(10 marks)

In order to explain the role & importance of leadership we must
first define what leadership is:
It can be said that Leadership is the ability to influence persons to
paticipate in the achievement of organisational or group goals. The
Leader accepts the responsilbility of ensuring commitment towards the
achivement of these goals by keeping his team focused and motivated.
The role of the leader in a team situation therefore is to;
- Establish Direction within the group i.e.ensure that Group goals are
clearly defined and understood by subordinates.
- Align subordinates towards the effective achivement of the grooups
goals or sub-goals.
- Motivate & Inspire subordinates towards commitment in the
achievement of goals.
Additinally Leaders also provide guidance, counsel and coaching
towards its team subordinates all geared towards the achievement of
group goals.

The success of any organisation depends in a large part on its
Leaders, Management is also a great part of this and in some cases
Management and Ladership can seem synonymous however it is important
to note that while management identifies proccesses and applications
necessary to achieve goals it does not identify how to put them into
practice. Since the majority of work in any organisation is carried
out by humans their needs must be taken into account. Effective
Leadership does this and in doing so, ensures that management
processes and plans are put into action.
Leadership therefore places more emphasis on members hearts and minds
and the way in which these members can be brought together and
persuaded to achieve group goals and it is for these reasons that
Leadership is of such importance.
