I am experiencing the exact same problem on my Fedora 9 guest virtual machine. The problem with the mouse appeared only AFTER installing VMware Tools. I also just upgraded to the latest VMware 6.5.1 so I'm not sure if that's part of it. I have another virtual machine running DSL (Damn Small Linux) that does not have VMware Tools installed where the mouse is working just fine so the issue appears to be related to installing the Tools.
I downloaded dsl 2.1 and it worked fine on my old computer where everything is connected by PS2, by when I boot the OS on my new computer, which has everything connected by USB the linux doesn't work, and when going in to the Linux, the mouse and the keyboard isn't reponsive, and the only thing i can do it restart computer, i thought DSL 2.1 comes with USB support in default
help
Max,
Due to infighting among the project's originators and main developers, DSL development seemed to be at a standstill for a long time, and the future of the project was uncertain, much to the dismay of many of the users.[1] On July 8, 2012, John Andrews (the original developer) announced that a new release was being developed. The DSL website, including the forums which were once inaccessible, were back, as well.[6] The first RC of the new 4.11 was released on August 3, 2012,[7] followed by a second one on September 26. The damnsmalllinux.org site was inaccessible again sometime in 2015 to February 2016. As of March 27, 2016, it was again accessible for some time,[8] but as of February 10, 2019 was inaccessible yet again. As of 2021 it was accessible.
I use a laptop with a 14 inch 1440p display, so I have to constantly mess with scaling to get stuff to be usable. However steam seems to be oddly stubborn about not working. I've tried adding the environment variable GDK_SCALE=2 to the exec line in the .desktop file, but that changes nothing. Same with running it through command line with that in the command. I've also tried enabling the Auto DPI scaling setting in the steam app, but that also changes absolutely nothing. I'm really not sure what to do at this point, because aside from only launching games I literally can't use it because everything is so small. Here's what it it looks like if you're curious, the font is bordering on unreadable and legitimately is in some situations, and everything is just super tiny.
For example, I have an old game I play via WINE, it has 640x480 resolution like all old games have, it's Windowed mode. It's too damn small. So I want to zoom it so it fits my screen better. I do NOT want to change resolution, I frequently go back and forth while playing the game to normal apps like browser, and of course with zooming it's very easy (zoom out takes like half a second if not less) and no annoying "black screen for 2 seconds" effect like when changing resolutions. Ergo I do not want to change resolutions, as that is something I can already do and don't want to, please don't suggest it.
I don't know man, I tried so many things for such a "relatively simple" thing, why is it so damn hard to get something like this. It's not like I'm asking for too much. We have even more "powerful" zoomers and all that stuff, but that's the problem they all can't downgrade to not track the mouse (I'm talking about 3rd party apps, not window managers)... and even hackish solutions like the VNC don't work because performance is too bad. I tried so long to make the VNC work but I'm lost, I don't know if it's me doing it wrong, but I spent too much time for today on it. Well actually reminds me why I got so mad yesterday, meh.
Now I need to freaking learn Compiz and customize it so it uses minimal resources for what I need. I seriously do not want any of compiz' "wow factor" and other eye candy it has, but damn, I can't believe this stupid zoom function to NOT FOLLOW the mouse pointer is not available in xfwm and well I got more annoyed at the dev who said he won't work on it / won't fix it... and even if someone submits a patch he may not "merge it / accept it" into the code, which sounds like a waste of time. Don't understand his crusade against this simple option -- I mean just have to keep the center position (zoom factor is already stored i guess) and lock it there wtf?! (not to mention it would be one tick as an option at most, if he wants to keep the customization "clean" or whatever -- I don't even care if i have to edit it manually in text editor god dammit I just want it)
DSL is then like an Atom Ant(remember the atom ant???). It works with my damn old computer at a very reasonable speed (Much faster than Windows 95 was !!!). The number of applications and extensions you can add to a fresh install is more than enough to enjoy working in your old computer. So we should all thank so much to everyone who did an effort to develop DSL!!!
Hey hey! So thanks for the tips about installing Ubuntu on virtual PC.
I was running VPC2007 at home and wanted to try out some of the Linux distros. Ubuntu 6.06 installed fine, and although it had mouse support it was sluggish etc. I thought that installing the "Virtual PC additions" package would solve that problem...but DAMN! i spent forever trying to work out how to install the goddamn thing.
I couldn't do it in the end. It was jsut tooooooo confusing. Has anyone else gopt any tips for installing those ADDITIONS onto an ubuntu setup?
I'm just having a ball with virtual PCs at the moment. They're really cool. Just for giggles..I am infecting my virtual machine with as many virii as I can. Just to see what the virii actually do? My anal security on my host os prevents me from doing it on that machine.....so woot! to the virtual ones.
Also: i can click around and i can hit buttons by accident (The mouse is there, its just not visible)
I can also write to the client via server-keyboard, but the keyboard layout is wrong, all of a sudden. (Has also been working before)
I would love to fix that behavior but, so far i havent been able to debug / trace this issue down to the root cause.
damn... i made a mistake. i thought i was using xorg... but in fact i was using wayland!
if somebody encounters the same problem: check if you are running on wayland!
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
switched back to xorg and i had a working mouse pointer again.
if you are using gdm: there is a small gears icon next to the login button, hit that and select Gnome with Xorg... there u go.
have a nice day!
I have a Logitech wireless laser mouse and after a year or so of use, the left click button would double click every time I tried to single click something. As can be imagined, this gets frustrating very fast. So, being the tinkerer that I am, I decided to open her up and see if it could be repaired. Sure enough, It's a pretty simple fix, if you have some common tools and a teaspoon (edit:a tablespoon) of patience. There are some very small parts involved, so you will want to make sure you ware working in a well lit, clean environment so that any parts that are dropped can be easily found. I have now performed this fix for the third time and decided to take pictures this time to share with others who may find this useful. Each time the repair lasts about 6 months to a year before needing to be redone. I imagine at some point the piece causing the problem will break, at which time the mouse will need to be replaced (unless you're determined enough to try and source parts). Good luck with your repair, I hope this helps.
On this particular model there are four screws which hold the mouse body together. These screws are located underneath the slide pads on the underside of the mouse. To remove the slide pads, gently pry the edge of the pad up with a small flat head screwdriver and peel it off. They are held in place with some sort of adhesive.
Hi, thank you very much for the great tutorial - I've tried it and my mouse is working fine. May I suggest that for step 8: Reinstall tension spring, you (1) place the curved tab (which is in the middle of the spring) at an angle on the tiny ledge of the metal piece on the mechanism first, then (2) hook the spring onto the front part of the mechanism, before finally (3) sliding the spring beneath the rear part of the mechanism?
I did not have much luck with the original action series of 2-1-3 until I tried 1-2-3 and the whole spring just slid into place while pivoting on the middle curved tab.
Hope this helps. And once again, thank you!
I have been experiencing weird double click issues, but did not want to go into disassembling of the mouse like described here, especially when the double click was not recorded by any of the website tools posted here.
Here is my solution:
download and run Mouse Fix:
It will solve the HW issue by removing the second click by its clever inner workings.
Among them, i loved puppy linux. Its small and really fast. Moreover it does not have any problems. However puppy linux is only for keeping on my pendrive as a fallback if my windows XP crashes. So i was looking for a windows replacement. Used ubuntu. HATED IT! Not friendly to newbies. Could not find a damn thing in there!
damn this game is dope, i'd totally pay full price for it if it releases on steam, it feels like stealing getting this from the ukraine bundle lol. only complaint is that the cursor in the menu is very buggy on linux, and 32:9 support would be nice
Hey I just got it working, its very strange tho. If I put the sense to 10 or above, it works, but 0-9 it disables mouse look all together, can still swing. I tried 1,2,3-9 and all failed, 10 and above works. I just dropped my mouse sense when using 10 in game and I got it working , but I did want to report that weird bug to you. I reinstalled drivers, the game, changed USB etc. only works above 10
That's really weird. Only reason I can think of is that the range of the sensitivity between 1-10 you can change is too low for your mouse DPI or something, and it barely moves at that point. I'm glad you got it working though! Sorry about the hassle.
