Good morning & a Happy New Year to all

A friendly reminder that our meeting is this Sunday at 2PM at T-Buds.
We can meet at Lawrence Station for 1:45PM if you would like and we can walk there together.

Anyway, it's time for our second book!!

Perks of being a wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the story of what it’s like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie’s letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives or to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and music—when all one requires to feel infinite is that perfect song on that perfect drive.

Where can I get this book?

Buy it, obviously from Chapters or if you'd like, I can take you to my new go-to bookstore.
Or if you have an e-reader, I have found the epub for you.

Discussion points This is not supposed to be like school.

These are just things to keep in mind while you're reading.

Feel free to ignore irrelevant questions & to bring forth

questions of your own.

What did you think of the book? (Like it? Dislike it? Why?)

What did you think the book was about?

Did you feel that the book fulfilled your expectations? Were you disappointed?

How realistic was the characterization? Would you want to meet any of the characters? Did you like them? Hate them?

Did the actions of the characters seem plausible? Why? Why not?

If one (or more) of the characters made a choice that had moral implications, would you have made the same decision? Why? Why not?

What are some of the book's themes? How important were they?

How are the book's images symbolically significant? Do the images help to develop the plot, or help to define characters?

Did the book end the way you expected?

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to send updated questions for the book club.

Questions I came up with - you are free to come up with more!

  1. Regarding Michael, what did you think “Problems at home” meant?
  2. What was your first thought when Charlie mentioned that Aunt Helen lived with them because something very bad happened to her?
  3. Why do you think his sister suddenly changed her mind about the guy after he hit her?
  4. Discuss Bill saying “…we accept the love we think we deserve”. (Re: Charlie’s sister)
  5. How did Michael think to say that the couple were getting a divorce?
  6. He was talking about Charlie’s neighbours or something.
  7. Do you think Michael wrote the poem?
  8. “…his neighbourhood…He said that if someone touched your sister or your mother, they paid the price, and everyone looked the other way.” Is this attitude/behaviour okay? Do you think abuse warranted punishment by being beaten to death?
  9. “You ever think, Charlie, that our group is the same as any other group like the football team? And the only real difference between us is what we wear and why we wear it?” Discuss.
And questions the publisher came up with:

  1. Why do you think Charlie wants to remain anonymous? Have there been times when you wish you could have, or did?
  2. Would you be friends with Charlie? Why or why not?
  3. Discuss Charlie's reaction to his brother and sister throwing a party. What did you think about the couple in his room? What about Charlie's response?
  4. What do you think being a wallflower is? Do you agree with Bob's definition?
  5. Talk about the mixed tapes in the story. Are you familiar with the songs and bands? Why do you think Charlie speaks about them so often?
  6. Do you like that the story is told through letters? Do you feel you know the kind of person Charlie is? His friends and family?
  7. Charlie's friends are moving away at the end of the story. Where does this leave Charlie? Can he make new friends?

Meeting: February 3rd at 12:30 PM
