LakshyaSen (born 16 August 2001) is an Indian badminton player.[1] Sen is a former world junior no. 1. He has won gold medals at the 2018 Asian Junior Championships in the boys' singles and at the Summer Youth Olympics in the mixed team event. He won the bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships and was runner-up at the 2022 All England Open. Sen was also a part of the Indian team which won the 2022 Thomas Cup. He also won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.[2]
On July 9, Lakshya Sen defeated China's Li Shifeng in straight sets 21-18, 22-20 in the final of 2023 Canada Open in Calgary, Canada.[18]Lakshya Sen was part of the Indian team which won historic silver medal in the men's team event at 2022 Asian games.[19]
The BWF World Tour, which was announced on 19 March 2017 and implemented in 2018,[20] is a series of elite badminton tournaments sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The BWF World Tour is divided into levels of World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, Super 300, and the BWF Tour Super 100.[21]
The Indian badminton player mixed his shots well to take a 5-1 lead in the first game. World No. 10 Lee Zii Jia, eight rungs above Sen in the badminton rankings, mounted a comeback to nudge ahead at 17-16.
After a slow start to the second game, Sen bagged five points to make it 6-3 and went on to lead the Malaysian badminton player by two points at the break. Lee Zii Jia countered Sen with a string of quick smashes to lead at 16-14 but by winning the next seven points, Sen took the match into the decider.
After the change of ends in the decider, Lee Zii Jia continued to engage Sen in longer rallies but was unable to take the lead. Eventually, Sen progressed to the semi-finals after holding on to his advantage.
From being a kid who was competing at the junior level not too long ago, Lakshya Sen has now beaten the legends of the sport and won medals at the highest level, emerging as the poster boy of Indian badminton.
Lakshya Sen managed to prevail 21-19, 21-18 to win the Asian Junior Championship for the first time. It made him the first Indian to win the junior continental title in 53 years. Gautam Thakkar had achieved the feat back in 1965.
Sen brushed aside Ikhsan Rumbay in the quarters before facing a stiff challenge from Kodai Naraoka in the semis. The Indian dropped the opening game but bounced back in the next two to make the Youth Olympics final.
Just before the world came to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakshya Sen came into international prominence, moving on from Challenge level tournaments to the BWF World Tour.
The Indian shuttler went on to clinch back-to-back Super 100 tournaments, with a victory at the Saarlorlux Open. The triumphs helped Lakshya Sen break into the top 50 of the badminton world rankings for the first time.
Lakshya Sen started 2022 by winning his maiden BWF Super 500 title at the India Open. He added another medal to his fast-filling cabinet with a historic second-place finish at the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships 2022.
Three months later, Lakshya Sen landed his first Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham, UK with a thrilling come-from-behind 19-21, 21-9, 21-16 victory against Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia in the final.
The Indian badminton player defeated the People's Republic of China's Li Shifeng, the Asian Games 2023 gold medallist, to win the 2023 Canada Open title. In 2024, Sen made the semi-finals of the All England Open but lost to Jonatan Christie.

Lakshya Sen has badminton running through him, thanks to his father, D K Sen, a revered badminton coach in India. His brother Chirag is also a professional badminton player. He started training at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore when he was under ten years.
Sen became the no. 1 junior singles player in the BWF World Junior ranking of 2017. He won the Asian Junior Championships, a silver medal in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, and a bronze medal at the BWF Junior World Championships.
2022 proved to be an eventful year for the shuttler! Lakshya Sen clinched his first Super 500 title by winning the India Open Tournament of 2022. He also managed to defeat World No.1 Viktor Axelsen in the semifinals of the German Open.
Sen clinched a silver in the 2022 All England Open Badminton Championships. He also won the 2022 Thomas Cup as a part of the Indian men's team. Sen made India proud by becoming the Commonwealth champion at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the men's singles category. He won the silver in the mixed team event.
The meaning of his name is aim or goal. And Lakshya Sen truly exemplifies his name. One of his coaches at the PPBA (Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy), Vimal Kumar, said, "What initially struck both Prakash and me about Lakshya was his enormous intensity and desire to win."
As a kid, he took every loss to his heart. However, he is now more calm and collected. His game is not one of blind aggression. In addition to strength, he advocates speed to confound his competitors. Lakshya Sen is a blend of attacking shots and razor-sharp movements on the court.
Did you know Lakshya Sen played the fastest badminton smashes ever in men's singles at an astounding speed of 420kph? He achieved this feat during the final match of the Canada Open on July 10th, 2023. The record was later broken by another Indian Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
Lakshya Sen plays his smashes strong but calculated. He will employ a mix of smashes, half-smashes, and fast drops to exert power over his opponent. Lakshya's strength lies in his excellent footwork, which allows him to hold his ground and play varied shots in quick succession.

In the Round of 32 in the Canada Open, Lakshya Sen's opening match was against Thailand's badminton player Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Sen defeated him 21-18 and 21-15.In Round 16, Lakshya Sen faced Brazil's Ygor Coelho de Oliveira. Sen triumphed over him by winning 21-15 and 21-11.In the quarter-final match, he faced German badminton player Julien Carraggi.
This was the only match of Lakshya Sen which went into the third set in the Canada Open. Sen won the first set by 21-8 but in the second set, the German gave a tough fight and won the stage by 21-17. Eventually, Sen flexed his muscles in the third set by winning 21-10.In the semi-final, the 21-year-old trounced Japan's Kenta Nishimoto by 21-17 and 21-14.
In the final Lakshya faced China's Li Shi Feng and outclassed him by winning in straight sets 21-18 and 22-20.Meanwhile, double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu failed to book a finale ticket after losing 14-21 15-21 to world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in her women's singles semifinal.

In 2019, Lakshya Sen won his first BWF Tour title by defeating Japanese badminton player Yusuke Onodera to clinch the Dutch Open. Later in 2019, Sen also won the SaarLorLux Open and the Scottish Open.
