One success story involves a third-generation, family-owned business. The company had secured several new, multi-year contracts with promising clients but was reeling from past financial mistakes. They needed a loan to grow and could not work with a bank. After thoroughly researching the company and the new contracts, Kompass provided a term loan which enabled the company to buy the equipment and hire the staff needed to fulfill their obligations. Kompass also factored some receivables to provide immediate cash. The family-owned business and Kompass are now working on a structured equity partnership.

For many people, solo self-employment means professional autonomy, a high degree of creative freedom, and flexibility. Solo self-employed individuals master entrepreneurial challenges and shape the digital and ecological transformation in their fields of activity. The ESF Plus programme KOMPASS (Compact help for solo self-employed persons) of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs supports them in this - by providing financial support for tailor-made continuing education and training measures.

KOMPASS supports solo self-employed individuals in establishing a crisis-proof and sustainable business model. This is achieved through broad, low-threshold funding for individually selected continuing education and training measures. Solo self-employed individuals receive a financial grant of up to 4,500 euros. Funding is possible once within twelve months.

KOMPASS is aimed at full-time solo self-employed individuals residing and working in Germany who have been active on the market for at least two years and employ a maximum of one full-time equivalent (FTE) employee.

Funding is available for measures with a minimum duration of 20 hours, which must be completed within six months. What is supported depends on the individual needs of the solo self-employed individuals. These can be business management skills, digital skills and methodological knowledge, or job-specific expertise. Solo self-employed individuals choose the appropriate provider and measures with the support of KOMPASS focal points.

Interested solo self-employed individuals can contact one of the nationwide KOMPASS focal points and receive advice on suitable measures for them in a free initial consultation. No. Although every resident is required to be working or in school, the first 30 days of the program allows both the resident and staff to see if the program is a fit and allows the time needed to assist with job searching, resume building, or embark on educational offerings.

Project Kompass is a 501c3 non-profit organization and does not request funding from state or federal sources. Instead, Project Kompass is solely funded by generous donors, grants, and sponsors throughout the Greater Lowell area and beyond.

Project Kompass is committed to every resident. BUT, there are program guidelines and expectations that must be followed. This includes, working or school, saving first, keeping your personal space clean, participating in shared house chores, attending life skill workshops, and committing to community service hours on a quarterly basis.

COMSENS+ is an innovative project together with Prof. Jrg Robert from Technische Universitt Ilmenau with the aim of researching a new approach for wireless data transmission from sensor networks using the examples of monitoring CO2 emissions from peatlands and nitrate contamination of layered water in agricultural soils.

Lube.Life is an innovative approach to predict the behavior of lubricants under difficult operating conditions. Sensor data, predictive online algorithms and simulated analysis data (including from infrared spectrum) are combined and used for an overall evaluation of the lubricant. The pairing of the lubricant with a machine element such as bearings or gears must be perfectly matched over the service life of the equipment. If contamination, difficult environmental conditions or unplanned operating conditions are added, the lubricant can have a potential for damage. The risk for such damage potential is determined online.

In the HIPS growth network, Thuringian industrial companies and research institutions are developing novel, robust and highly integrated sensors based on the patented SiCer technology. The aim of the collaborative project is the development and collective marketing of novel sensors based on a unique combination of silicon technology (Si) and ceramic multilayer technology (Cer).
