library: curl is powered by libcurl - a cross-platform library with a stable API that can be used by each and everyone. This difference is major since it creates a completely different attitude on how to do things internally. It is also slightly harder to make a library than a "mere" command line tool.
pipes: curl works more like the traditional Unix cat command, it sends more stuff to stdout, and reads more from stdin in a "everything is a pipe" manner. Wget is more like cp, using the same analogue.
Single shot: curl is basically made to do single-shot transfers of data. It transfers just the URLs that the user specifies, and does not contain any recursive downloading logic nor any sort of HTML parser.
More portable: curl builds and runs on lots of more platforms than wget. For example: OS/400, TPF and other more "exotic" platforms that aren't straight-forward Unix clones. curl requires but a C89 compiler.
curl supports HTTP/0.9, HTTP/1.0, HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 to the server and HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 to proxies. wget supports 1.0 and 1.1 and only HTTP/1 to proxies.
Much more developer activity. While this can be debated, I consider three metrics here: mailing list activity, source code commit frequency and release frequency. Anyone following these two projects can see that the curl project has a lot higher pace in all these areas, and it has been so for 15+ years. Compare on openhub.
Recursive!: Wget's major strong side compared to curl is its ability to download recursively, or even just download everything that is referred to from a remote resource, be it a HTML page or a FTP directory listing.
GNU: Wget is part of the GNU project and all copyrights are assigned to FSF. The curl project is entirely stand-alone and independent with no organization parenting at all with almost all copyrights owned by Daniel.
Curl in contrast to wget lets you build the request as you wish. Combine that with the plethora of protocols supported - FTP, FTPS, Gopher, HTTP, HTTPS, SCP, SFTP, TFTP, Telnet, DICT, LDAP, LDAPS, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, RTSP and URI - and you get an amazing debugging tool (for testing protocols, testing server configurations, etc.).

In 1996, two utilities were born that allow you to download remotely-hosted resources. They are wget, which was released in January, and cURL which was released in December. They both operate on the Linux command line. They both connect to remote servers, and they both retrieve stuff for you.

The blog post Wget with Firefox Cookies shows how to access the sqlite data file in which Firefox stores its cookies. That way one doesn't need to manually export the cookies for use with wget. I am watching sample metadata tutorial. I downloaded the metadata using URL but wanted to practice using wget or curl. I do not know the difference and do not know why both not working as in picture
wget and curl are the commands that are used to HTTP requests without any GUI or software, rather we use the Terminal in Linux that provides the respective output or message. The commands are very useful for web crawling, web scraping, testing RESTful APIs, etc.

connect with a proxy or vpn and then test the curl in command line.
or use the "-1" or "-3" option with curl command and see if this fixes it.

Install links2, and navigate in a text browser, might work that way, have not tested it my self.
But this has always been my option in such cases when you need the correct referal page to do something where wget fails.
We do not transmit or record the curl commands you enter or what they're converted to. This is a static website (hosted on GitHub Pages) and the conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript.
(while we limited the possible impact of having followed shitty instructions downloading stuff to be autoran in all used qubes by following randomly found instructions, or having access to internet for anything else then wget and curl through wrappers using the proxy).
I am dozing out of my suggestion, really do not like the idea of giving internet access to even untrusted templates, but I agree with you: this might be to contain user errors who needs security the most, while I agree with @fsflover that wget-proxy would require from the user to convert upstream instructions everytime it fails(I liked that error/learning approach).
Meanwhile, I will simply deploy wget-proxy and curl-proxy to limit the flood in my support box. Ping me again if the idea of a better, upstreamed solution to deal with daily, real-users facing problems of wanting to add a trusted repository should be done in a non-duplicated, untrusted template (which duplicates network bandwith as well for updates, still today, and is not a luxury all end-users have).

I'm trying to build a new server with wildfly 9.02 but I can't download wildfly using wget or curl. Either tool returns an error that the connection is refused but if I put the same URL into a browser window on my desktop it downloads the file just fine. Since I have no browser on the server, it would be very helpful if I could download directly rather than have to create a mount to a fileshare somewhere to get the file. This is for a Teiid server and the Teiid download worked just fine with wget.
I've actually worked around the issue with a mount to a file share but I am trying to create a script that will build additional servers for me so I'd like to resolve the wget or curl question. Is there a better way to get the downloads?

I ran into similar problem couple of days ago when i started to deploy my containers into new VM environment. I have docker swarm running, user defined docker overlay network and containers attached to that network. And by some strange reason containers failed to communicate with SOME of the servers in outside world. Most of the curl/wget requests worked fine, but with some specific servers they failed ( for example). They did reach connected status and after that just hung there. Curl on host machine worked just fine. Same containers and swarm setup on my local machine and on AWS worked just fine. But in this new VM it did not.
Is there an easy way to download baked agents from the check_mk server to client machines using wget or curl? It seems cumbersome to have to d/l the file using a browser and then try to scp/ftp it somewhere. I can see
the //check_mk/agents folder but those look like the generic agents not the specific baked ones.
