Flipped out by the tension bullshit, They were ordered by Military
Intelligence and the civilian 'contractor' interrogators to 'soften
up' the detainees before interrogations. This is according to some
senior US military officials speaking on the record including some of
the report by the US Army Major General who conducted the initial
investigation started in January. BTW where is your proof that the
subjects were extremists? Some have already been released (and
interviewed on US TV), unlikely to have happened if they fit your
description
BTW The US now 'contracts out' their intelligence work? I knew shrub
was in favour of exporting jobs, but, SPIES ?
There are some other issues regarding prisoner/guard relationships see
below:
http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/2004/200405/20040507.html
has some interesting background on this, below is an excerpt, go to
the site for the full item.
Psychology of Prison
Yesterday, the Washington Post obtained more graphic photos of US Army
officials abusing Iraqi prisoners at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison
outside Baghdad. In one, reservist Lynndie England of the 372nd
Military Police Company holds a leash tied to an Iraqi prisoner who is
lying naked on the floor.
The images all have a common theme that of prisoners being humiliated
and degraded at the hands of US Army officials who pose with their
thumbs up, wearing satisfied grins.
And of course the question everyone's asking: what would make these
prison guards do such terrible things?
Well, according to some psychologists, anyone, under the right
circumstances, can commit these kinds of atrocities.
Back in 1971, research psychologists at Stanford University created a
simulated prison. Then they randomly assigned student volunteers to be
prisoners or guards. The study was cut short after the "guards" began
putting plastic bags over the prisoners' heads, forcing them to strip
naked and encouraging them to perform sexual acts…. Sound familiar?
Two years ago in Britain, a reality series on BBC called 'The
Experiment' revisited the Stanford study. The scientist behind that
series was Stephen Reicher, Professor of Social Psychology at
University of St. Andrews, in Scotland. He joined us from his office.
Legal Expert
The torture of Iraqi prisoners has shocked many observers, who
believed the military would not allow such abuses to take place.
But many people were just as alarmed to learn that soldiers aren't the
only ones implicated in the abuse.
Allegations of wrongdoing have also been made against American
civilians working for private military contractors in Iraq. The
Defense Department is currently investigating two companies hired to
provide interrogation and other services there.
All of this has raised concerns about the legal accountability of
private military contractors operating abroad.
Scott Silliman is the executive director of Duke University's Center
on Law, Ethics and National Security and he's spent a lot of time
looking at this issue. We reached him at his home in Durham, North
Carolina.

1. They were not 'truck drivers', they were hired civilian 'contract'
security personnel. This does NOT excuse what happened to them. This
is the case with the four men whose desecration was widely broadcast
two weeks ago.
2. Because the enemy behaves in brutal fashion we should sink to that

If Rummy was such a class act why didn't he report to congress in January
when he knew about it? Who knows weather these "prisoners" were actual
combatants or just civilians going out for the equivalent of a litre of
milk. Were they charged and convicted of anything or just rounded up like
cattle and tortured? Since american soldiers cannot be tried for war crimes
some of them have taken that to heart and exploitated that for their own
pleasure. Or is it "I was just following orders"? As always the person
responsible for those orders will not be charges but the persons following
them will.
Yada, yada, yada. If you feel so strongly about it, go over there and do
charity work.
What do they want to do to the people who did that? They want them punished. So why not the same for the people who commited the Iraqi humilitation crimes?
In an additional condemnation of their actions, Sharx and Top Poster are
defending them. If any of those soldiers read these newsgroups, that alone
would be enough to get them to hang their heads in shame.

There was a time in our country when the local US Army commander would have

Nowadays, every nitwit in congress has got to rake good people over the

In this particular case, I expect it is a bit more extensive than just a
few perverts in the US army.
It may not be the deep "Dominate the Iraqis" conspiracy that is being
bandied about either.
I expect it is somewhere in between.
I admire Rumsted for coming out and taking full responsibility for it.
If Rumsted follows through, I think we will see something closer to the
truth come out.

That they grew up in the environment you describe suggests the Iraqi
jail business could be more widespread than you think it is.
These "kids" in Iraq go to the movies. They rent videos. They grew up
watching sitcoms. Throw in a little bit of military training that is
designed to "dehumanize" the enemy just a bit.
Now, I expect a few heads will roll. The question is just which
heads--and how high up?
you just have to check the history books to know the answer. with
very few exceptions it was only the guys at the bottom (who actually
did the dirty deeds) who were held accountable. the people who set up
the conditions by setting up an atmosphere of dehumanizing the enemy
and defining expected results "no matter how ..." usually go
unscathed. i wouldn't be surprised of a rumsfeld announcement along
the lines "all i did to was approve a program to soften up the enemy
for interrogations. i had no idea about the details"

If some soldiers with weak morals, resulting from living in the American

not been caught.
In short, nshinede's argument doesn't necessarily support his claim that

Most of these soldiers were growing up in the American cultural

others could too.

Nshinede, as we know, has nothing but contempt
for human rights, freedom, democracy and common
human decency.
He stands convicted as a fascist by his own words.

I do not know where all this fantasy nonsense, these suicidal concepts of
morality and "fairness" of "civil rights" come from in the American public
today.

You wish. Did you watch Major General Taquba's testimony "failure in
leadership ... from the brigade commander on down." "Lack of
discipline, no training whatsoever and no supervision. Supervisory
omission was rampant"
After Me Lai all US troops are to receive yearly training in what is
acceptable behaviour towards civilians and prisoners. Reservists are
to get this training during basic training.
Taguba testified that he had not read the Red Cross report but agreed
with its finding that the abuse was systemic. He said he was told that
some inmates were moved around to avoid visits by Red Cross officials.
Remember the Red Cross? They are also the 'protecting power' seeing to
the well being of any US troops who become POWs.

Dumb straw man argument, the US and shrub in particular are stuck to
Iraq like Brer Rabbit to the tar baby. In the words of Colin Powell
"You break it, you own it."
Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day.
Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die
Indeed. In the case of Iraq, it's better to getaway from it before it
breaks you.
And you a dumbass by yours.
As Barry would say, "cite"?
10,000 Iraqi civilians killed! Nonsense. This war has produced fewer
civilian deaths through combat operations than probably any war in the
history of the earth.
Many more children and adults were starved to death by the United Nations
and France, Germany and Russia, stealing the "food for oil" money.
Where are your tears and your high words and your outrage on their behalf?
Where is your sympathy for the hundreds of thousands to probably millions
murdered by the Iragi's prior government?
God help our country if yet another of these leftist morons is elected
president with control of congress. We will end in one of two places, as
like California, as a welfare state which destroys itself, or a nation
paying tribute to all the terrorists
in the world, to the same end.
You leftists are cheap, petty little freeloading bums, who simply want "the
government" to feed and clothe you for life. You would destroy our country
simply to win an election to a man promising to become your parent, and make
you his children at our expense. You have no moral or ethical position on
which to judge me or anyone else. You leftists are in fact just parasites on
the backs of working people.

And, videos showed the disgraced soldier - made notorious in a photo showing
her holding a leash looped around an Iraqi prisoner's neck - engaged in
graphic sex acts with other soldiers in front of Iraqi prisoners, Pentagon
officials told NBC Nightly News.
"Almost everybody was naked all the time," another lawmaker said.
Many members of Congress left the 45-minute viewing session early, thereby
missing the porno performance by England, but there were enough other images
of torture, humiliation and intimidation to sicken anyone.
"It was pretty disgusting, not what you'd expect from Americans," said Sen.
Norm Coleman (R-Minn.). "There was lots of sexual stuff - not of the Iraqis,
but of our troops."
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who also characterized the photos as
"disgusting," agreed, noting, "It's hard to believe that this actually is
taking place in a military facility."
The shocking photos and videos, provided on computer disks by Pentagon
officials, showed attack dogs snarling at cowering prisoners, Iraqi women
forced to expose their breasts, and naked prisoners tied together on the
floor, senators revealed as they emerged from the heavily guarded conference
room.
"It was significantly worse than I had anticipated," said Sen. Ron Wyden
(D-Ore). "Take the worst case and multiply it over several times."
"I don't know how these people got into our Army," said Sen. Ben Nighthorse
Campbell (R-Colo.), who reported seeing "several pictures of Iraqi women who
were disrobed or putting their shirts up."
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) described the images as "more detailed and
more graphic than the pictures that have been released publicly," referring
to the disturbing photos of Iraqis being abused at Abu Ghraib prison that
surfaced two weeks ago, and which Islamic terrorists claim led to this
week's revenge beheading of American Nick Berg.
"Normally, I side with disclosure and openness, but in this case, these
photos are evidence," Schumer said, indicating that he favors keeping the
lid on the alarming pictures, as Vice President Dick Cheney and Sen. John
Warner (R-Va.) have urged.
Rep. Jane Harman (Calif.), ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence
Committee, said she was most appalled by a video of a handcuffed prisoner
beating his head against a wall in an apparent bid to knock himself
unconscious to escape abuse.
In another video clip, she said, a group of men were shown masturbating.
Before the pictures of England's sex romps were shown to Congress, the
21-year-old reservist from West Virginia tried to portray herself as a
reluctant participant who was just following orders.
"I didn't really, I mean, want to be in any pictures," England told a Denver
TV station.
"I was instructed by persons in higher rank to 'stand there, hold this
leash, look at the camera,' and they took picture for PsyOps [psychological
operations]," she told KCNC-TV.
England acknowledged "it was kind of weird" when she was photographed
smiling, with a cigarette in her mouth, as she leaned forward and pointed at
the genitals of a naked, hooded Iraqi at Abu Ghraib prison.
England has refused to identify who gave her the orders, saying only that
they came from "persons in my chain of command."
England faces a military court-martial that includes charges such as
conspiracy to maltreat prisoners and assault consummated by battery.
She could face punishment ranging from a reprimand to more than 15 years in
prison

how the fuck do you know how many people were killed?
its common knowledge that youve refused to count them
and if you refuse to count them, how can you make your assertion about
"any war in history"?

No dust bunnies there!
Once again, this discusting but very minor event was uncovered and acted
upon by our military. It was reported to the Government by our military, and
these degenerates will be brought to justice by our military. Not by these
leftist news hacks, nor by the trash that continues to revisit it. These are
the same people who visit the filthy trash on the internet, and in the so
called "adult" book stores, who are really overage teenagers.
It was done, it is over, the guilty will be plunished. Let's concern
ourselves with something really important to the Iraqi people, the United
States of America, and the world.
