Usually, however, other people are involved. Therefore, we are not to
be the hasty and foolish martyr who would needlessly sacrifice others
to save himself from the alcoholic pit. A man we know had remarried.
Because of resentment and drinking, he had not paid alimony to his
first wife. She was furious. She went to court and got an order for
his arrest. He had commenced our way of life, had secured a position,
and was getting his head above water. It would have been impressive
heroics if he had walked up to the Judge and said, "Here I am."
We thought he ought to be willing to do that if necessary, but if he
were in jail he could provide nothing for either family. We suggested
he write his first wife admitting his faults and asking forgiveness.
He did, and also sent a small amount of money. He told her what he
would try to do in the future. He said he was perfectly willing to go
to jail if she insisted. Of course she did not, and the whole
situation has long since been adjusted.

Just because I got sober doesn't mean everything else in my life would
magically be solved. I am still married to the same woman who stayed
with me thru many years of alcoholic drinking and destruction.
However, there is still a lot of damage that can only be repaired by
doing the next right thing today. Instead of living in regret, I make
honest attempts to "be there" today. Sometimes the best amend is
simply not causing any more negativity.
I can recall driving drunk with my kid in the car, my wife can
remember coming home from a long day and far commute from work
wondering what kind of shape I'd be in, and together we can rehash the
incoherent arguments induced by booze. No, things aren't perfect
today, but we do see a counselor and have our own therapeutic outlets
to continue working out our shortcomings. The desire and willingness
is there, followed by action as outlined in our program of recovery,
so we do share hope.

A big part of my job responsibilities is running payroll for
approximately 250 employees who work nationwide for me. Not always an
easy task - computer issues, human error, etc - as long as I remain
honest and willing to be helpful and of service, I can assist in
resolving all of their issues. I try to live in the SOLUTION:
S - Started the day right with an early morning meeting before work
O - Other than doing the best I can each day, there is nothing more I
can do
L - Life is good, certainly not perfect, but it's good
U - Unlike when I was still drinking, I have HOPE today
T - This too shall pass, whatever it is, it WILL pass.
I - I am grateful to have clients who trust me
O - Over the past 4 ½ years in recovery, I have made progress - but
have not reached perfection J
N - No matter what.
