Yes, there is a long period of reconstruction ahead. We must take the
lead. A remorseful mumbling that we are sorry won't fill the bill at
all. We ought to sit down with the family and frankly analyze the past
as we now see it, being very careful not to criticize them. Their
defects may be glaring, but the chances are that our own actions are
partly responsible. So we clean house with the family, asking each
morning in meditation that our Creator show us the way of patience,
tolerance, kindliness and love.

Living amends are the only way to show we have changed. Words of good
intentions are meaningless unless we live what we promise. Avoiding
the drink is a good first step, but we are still people with
challenges and struggles. As long as we live the steps, are willing to
make honest amends, and have the desire to keep improving
relationships, the road ahead can be a blessing and not more of the
same destruction.
Past hurts may always hurt. Some of the things we did will never be
completely forgiven, and I can accept this fact. As long as I don't
repeat the old behaviors, my amends hold value. Today I honestly put
my best foot forward, and over time the changed attitude followed by
right action show what Alcoholics Anonymous, step work, and God have
done for me.
