The AAVSO Fall Meeting is coming up at the beginning of November. I
suspect I will be reporting on the progress of this group. If you have
any work, either completed or in-progress, that you wouldn't mind
having highlighted, I would love to show off some of the work done by
members of this group.

Just let me know publicly or privately.

Thanks!
M.

Just to clarify for people who are as stupid as John Greaves (if such
people exist) -- my job in this group is to organize and report on
your activities. Scientists like Doug and Patrick are here to provide
you ideas and advice. What this group accomplishes is up to you. I'm
not going to take credit for your success or failure. I'm just going
to report on it. There is tons of great data mining science going on
and we hope to support and encourage AAVSO members to participate in
it. Whether they do or not is up to them.

Cheers,
M.

I apologize for the pissy tone in this. John knows just how to get my
goat. (Hi John.) I would love to do more to encourage participation. I
barely have time in my life to do things that are necessities. I know
many of you know what I mean. I have done and will keep doing my best
given the time I have available.

If you want to give me ideas, suggestions or criticisms for what would
help you get acquainted with data mining, find projects or publish
your work, please let me know!

The best way to get specific help is to post a new message on this
group and we will all chime in.

Cheers,
M.

I assume that you are particularly interested in data mining with a
variable star emphasis or are you looking for info on any astronomical
data mining activities group members are doing?

I'm looking for any successful, original data mining projects. Ones
concerning variable stars and especially AAVSO data would be
especially nice. I will go through the literature myself but I'd be
happy to mention work brought to my attention by members of this list.

Cheers,
M.

I do work on the OGLE material most days mainly because I find it both
relaxing and enjoyable. There are so many variables in the database
that nobody has identified or characterised that you could spend years
working on it.

My recent AAVSO paper on the Detached Eclipsing Binary Light Curve
Fitter (DEBiL) Data Set seems to show that there are some dangers
inherent in using fully automated data processing for large data sets.
It would be instructive to look at a small subset of the DEBiL
results, perhaps the eccentric binaries, on a case by case basis.

The recently released UCAC3 is also worth having a look at.

This group has been very quiet recently and I must take my share of
the blame. I have been fully occupied with preparing to move house in
2010 and my many and varied hobbies have been rather neglected.

Did anything happen at the AAVSO Fall Meeting of particular interest
to this group?
