Set forth below is Steve's suggested letter to the law schools as part of
AAVIA's attempts to contact visually impaired law students. I think Steve's
proposed letter should be sent to the law schools, with a few corrections.
Please review and be prepared to discuss and approve during the AAVIA board
meeting.
I have a large envelope of AAVIA one page tri fold information sheets, I do
not remember when they were prepared or who had them before they were given
to me. I suggest that these pamphlets be sent along with the letters.

Subject: suggestions for law school letter
Hi Charles, Below are my ideas. Use, modify or disregard them as you see
fit.
Dear com,
I am writing introduce the American Association of Visually
Impaired Attorneys (AAVIA) to you, to your students who may face
visual limitations, and to any other members of your community to
whom our work and resources may prove relevant.
Founded in - as an affiliate of the American Council of the Blind
(ACB), AAVIA works to address the professional and career
development, technological and social issues facing attorneys
with sight loss.
Among other benefits, AAVIA provides members with networking
opportunities and with the chance to discuss problems and share
solutions in a supportive and knowledgeable setting. AAVIA
provides a forum through which its members can learnn from one
another's use of technology to achieve work performance goals and
overcome accessibility barriers; and through which members can
share techniques for effectively handling issues in courtroom
practice, in research, in interviewing and job search, and in
other facets of their careers. And perhaps most important,
though least specific, AAVIA provides the emotional support and
varying perspectives sometimes so useful for addressing and
overcoming the fears and misconceptions of others regarding the
ability of blind and visually impaired attorneys to function as
productively as their fully sighted peers.
For law students or those considering a legal career, AAVIA
offers unique entré into the world of law practice, providing
information about the numerous career paths, practice areas and
employment settings of our members, and offering the distilled
wisdom and experience of those members in a unique mentoring
role.
More information about AAVIA is contained in the flyer on our
website at We conope you will share our information with your
community, and we appreciate your attention to this letter. We
would be happy to answer any questions that you, your colleagues
or students may have.
Thank you,
Charles Nabarrete,
President
