OFFICIAL Stage 21 Results and Final Standings: Team ANSEL WIN!

STAGE Grade: A-
I rate this stage an A- again. To be honest, the route disappointed me a little. I was expecting a Montmartre feast, but it wasn’t. Perhaps that climb is too much. Perhaps it was lacking a Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogačar attack. On the other hand, the race itself was a huge surprise, with lots of attacking and a sublime sprint.

It was eleven against one. More or less, perhaps I missed a rider. But Matthew Brennan in the decisive breakaway against eleven riders determined that one of them should win stage 21 of the 2026 Vuelta a España.
That breakaway had formed on the fourth and final climb to Generalife. Not Wout van Aert, like we all thought, but Brennan made the jump to that group. At this point it comes down to mostly luck and good fortune. There were multiple attacks, Brennan countered many of them. And then Ramses Debruyne, Tobias Halland Johannessen, and Alessandro Formele attacked, and Brennan was too slow to react, and then the race was over. Three in the final decisive breakaway.
Formele was of course the fastest sprinter. Debruyne tried to drop both him and Johannessen, but failed. And then Johannessen applied the lesson we had learned earlier this week: if you sprint from the front, you have a bike length’s advantage.
Formele never made up that bike length, Johannessen won the stage. His fifth career victory but none of the previous four measure up to this one. A big surprise, a fantastic season for Uno-X Mobility.
I saw an Equipo Kern Pharma jersey once, in the back of the peloton, on that steep climb. They didn’t play a substantial part in today’s stage. Their Vuelta was over yesterday.
Seventeenth in prize money, a little better than expected. Berrade earned another 55 UCI point for being 19th.
Those UCI points are critical to them. They remain ahead of Euskaltel – Euskadi in the UCI rankings, but the other two Spanish ProTeam teams are well ahead of them. Team Polti VisitMalta is also ahead. In fact, Bardiani CSF 7 Saber is the only small team behind them.
There was an interesting trade this year to ensure that five small teams would all go to a grand tour. Polti and Bardiani to the Giro, Caja Rural – Seguros RGA to the Tour, and Kern Pharma and Burgos Burpellet BH to the Vuelta. If that doesn’t happen next year and the Vuelta has to choose from Caja Rural, Burgos, and Kern Pharma — then our team is out of the 2027 Vuelta a España.
Cycling is business. Tough business. This Vuelta was good for our team, but not enough to catch Caja Rural and Burgos. There’s work to do. They go to Croatia next, for the CRO race. A 2.Pro stage race, winning the general classification is just 125 UCI points. But they must chase every UCI point for the rest of this season if they hope to catch up with Burgos.

Spoiler alert: Team Ansel win their final AAVC Grand Tour game in the U19 category.
They took first place in stage 21: most points from classifications, most points overall, a three-way tie for most riders in the Top-25 (five). They had the most points in the Final Standings too, with a tie for most rider in the Top-25 (eight).
Second in stage 21 were Team Hugo, who had most points from the stage and also five riders in the Top-25. Team Tadej were third today, Team Grace fourth with five riders in the Top-25.
Team Amalia were fifth, and Team Charles and Team Joshua had missed the boat — sixth and seventh.
In the Final Standings, Team Amalia were second, Team Hugo third, and Team Charles fourth. Team Grace were fifth, Team Joshua sixth, and Team Tadej seventh. None of this changed anything in the overall standings.
That’s it for the 2026 Grand Tours. I have thoroughly enjoyed reporting on the races this year. We live in remarkable times.
The 2027 Giro d’Italia starts on May 8, 2027. That’s just 236 sleeps away. It has been a hassle to manage this game with Pro Cycling Stat’s attempts to block bots. I’ll use the winter to redo my scripts. If I succeed, I’ll be back in May. If not — eh, I’m not making any promises.
