Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!

My goal was to have ten juniors playing our 2025 AAVC Giro d’Italia game. We had twelve! Thank you, parents and juniors!

All I want for July is more juniors. If you know anyone under 18 who is interested, recruit them. If you live out of state, talk to your local devo teams. If you live in Ann Arbor, tell them about Lance Armstrong and the one race he cared about, the Tour de France. If you have kids, make sure they play the next AAVC grand tour games.

The Tour de France starts on July 5, 2025.

The Giro d’Italia Women starts on July 6, 2025.

This is a package deal. If I cover one, I’ll cover the other. Start recruiting!

STAGE Grade: C+

I rate today’s stage a C+. I barely watched it. Seeing the Colosseum and all makes for nice views but there was nothing special about the race today.

Route: 3/5         GC: 0/5             Tactics: 2/5       Sprint: 3/5         Surprises: 0/5

I’m old school. The last stage of a grand tour is processional. Champagne (or prosecco, as today). Smiling riders, teams eight wide, pictures, high fives. And then we have a sprint at the end, to keep us all happy. That’s what happened today.

If you must do something special, finish your grand tour with a time trial. But for the love of Eddy Merckx, do not try to turn the final stage into a bike race. I don’t know yet if I will cover the 2025 Tour de France, but if I do, I will be grumpy about the last stage. Instead of just doing laps on the Champs-Elysées, they take a detour through Montmartre three times. To make sure Tadej Pogačar will win the stage, maybe. I don’t know.

Anyway! That didn’t happen today. Instead we had a very straightforward sprint. Team Visma – Lease-a-Bike made no mistakes in their lead-out. Edoardo Affini handed it off to Wout van Aert. Then Olav Kooij launched when he sensed Matteo Moschetti coming from behind. Kooij won. No need to be dramatic about it.

Alessandro Tonelli won the first sprint for the traguardo volante today, but that was all. By doing that, he did overtake Mads Pedersen and we ended up second in that competition. That’s €6,000! There were no points in the fuga competition today, therefore we keep second place there as well. Sadly, only first place pays out in this competition.

Davide Piganzoli’s fourth placing in the Youth competition earns us €4,000.

We dropped from sixth to eleventh in the prize money standings. We ended up with €41,207. All the teams with riders in the GC Top 10 passed us.

We’re still 28th in the UCI rankings, I think relatively safe for that top 30 ranking we need to return to the Giro d’Italia in 2026.

Giulio Pellizzari was clearly the better rider in 2025. He’ll do well with Red Bull. Davide Piganzoli, meanwhile: he’s 21, and has no contract in 2026. Where will he go? Let’s play again in 2026 and find out.

Kometa: il gusto piu giusto che c'e in giro!

Spoiler alert: Team Hugo and Team Sam traded places in the Final Standings, everything else remaind the same.

Former winners Team Amalia may have underperformed, but with today’s sprint stage they took their third stage win. Most points from the stage, most points overall, most riders in the Top-25. They beat Team Charles by just a single point.

Third were Team Tadej, just ahead of Team Ansel. In fifth were Team Joshua, sixth Team Oliver, seventh Team Hugo.

Everyone else missed the boat today. Team Katja in eighth, Team Sam in ninth, Team Noah in tenth, Team Thomas in eleventh, and Team Grace in twelfth.

In the Final Standings, Team Tadej took the most bonus points, followed by Team Oliver, Team Joshua, Team Charles, Team Katja, Team Ansel, and Team Thomas. Only 50 points between second and seventh, it was all pretty close.

Team Sam dropped a bit, in eighth. Team Grace dropped a bit more, they were ninth. Team Noah in tenth, Team Amalia in eleventh, and Team Hugo in twelfth.

Not enough can be said about the total dominance of Team Tadej. In the lead from stage 1, they won 13 stages, and won the game by nearly 500 points. They got 635 points from Isaac del Toro — an inspired pick wins the game. But even without him, they would have been competitive. And they also picked Marco Frigo and Georg Steinhauser, together worth 40 points. One or two Yates, and their win would have been even more dominating.

Congratulations, Team Tadej, and your victory in this game reminds me of another Tadej. One that we will see in the 2025 Tour de France. Allez!
