Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!
STAGE Grade: B-
I rate today’s stage a B-. I
believe that’s pretty high for a time trial stage. I was generous about the
course; partly because it was so long. The last time we saw a time trial this
long in the Giro d’Italia was 2015, stage 14. Won by Vasil Kiryienka, a
rider I do not remember.
In the general classification, 21 riders in the top 25 have moved up or down.
That’s a good number of stars for that category. As for tactics, choosing how
to ride a time trial is a tactic that began in December for most of these
riders. I don’t underestimate it.
I can’t decide if Afonso Eulálio keeping his leader’s jersey is a big surprise.
I’ll revisit that topic in a minute, but I’ll give the stage just two stars for
surprises.
Route: 3/5 GC: 3/5 Tactics: 3/5 Sprint: 0/5 Surprises: 2/5
Go back to any of the previous time trial stage reports and you’ll find that I always say the same thing. For two-thirds of the riders, there is nothing at stake in this race. They can’t win the stage, they can’t defend or attack a general classification position, they just race to get to the next stage and continue to do their job within their team.
Afonso Eulálio has 0 points in Pro Cycling Stat’s time trial ranking. In last year’s Giro he finished 92nd and 150th in the two time trials, and he was 122nd in this year’s UAE Tour’s time trial. That’s not the profile of a rider who finished 41st today, less than two minutes down from Jonas Vingegaard, and enough to hold on to the Maglia Rosa by 27 seconds.
Until today, he’s only ever been part of the two-thirds. Today he had to race his time trial for real. I doubt he started preparing in December, as the likes of Filippo Ganna and Thymen Arensman did. But he rode like he’s never rode a time trial before, and he got the result. Another day in the Maglia Rosa and probably more.
Mirco Maestri finished 40th for our focus team today. I saw his name in the intermediate results, although I never saw him ride, and I wondered what his point was today. Fifteenth place scores UCI points, and that seemed out of reach even if half the contenders crash out. Perhaps he just likes this pace. Looking at his career stats, 40th is about normal for him in a time trial.
Our prize money is now up to 21,358 euros; more than half of that from Diego Pablo Sevilla, and just under half of that was just from wearing the Maglia Azzura. He also won the combattivitá award for stage 1, I missed that earlier.
Every rider on our team has earned prize money. Even Andrea Mifsud who is, I had to look it up, actually from Malta. The only Maltese rider in the 2026 Giro d’Italia! He finished 19th in stage 8, one of the survivors of the breakaway that formed late in that stage. That’s another 276 euros for the team! (Tenth to twentieth pay out 276 euros.)

There have been two more abandons since Stage 4, and both affect Team Felix: Timo de Jong and Felix Engelhardt will not score any points for them in the 2026 Giro d’Italia.
Stage 10 was won by Team Ansel. They are now in second place. Team Grace limited the damage, second place today and they are still in first.
Team Sam finished third, just beating out Team Amalia. They are third and fifth, respectively. Team Hugo and Team Tadej also came in neck and neck, fifth and sixth. They are seventh and fourth in the standings.
Team Charles came in seventh, sixth overall. And Team Felix missed the boat today, eighth today and eighth in the standings.
Stage 11 is designed to be a free-for-all for those chasing stage wins. A few climbs, a technical descent to the finish. The contenders for the general classification will be happy to see a large breakaway gallop into the distance, but who’s in that breakaway? You would think this is a Giulio Ciccone kind of day, but the peloton was weird when he was in the front last week. I didn’t understand it then and I still don’t. Perhaps a safer bet is Jhonatan Narváez. Two stage wins already and nothing else to race for. I believe I Narváez.
