STAGE Grade: B-

 

I rate today’s stage a B-. Not much happened today. The sprint was chaotic (and with a surprising winner), but not good. A bike race on TV is better than none, but this is one you could skip and not feel guilty.

Learn to read the race. There was a strange situation in front of the peloton today. After the inevitable breakaway had formed, four riders, there was a fifth rider to leave the peloton. Liam Slock, we’ve seen him in the breakaway a few times. He quickly took a minute on the peloton, with the break still 30 seconds up the road.

 

But there it stayed. I don’t know why. After 15 kilometers of trying, he could not close the gap. Why? I don’t understand. Tactically, there was no reason for the breakaway to keep him out of their group. Five riders have to work less than four.

 

And Slock was always capable of catching the breakaway because that is how these breakaways work. They leave the peloton, then once the gap is what the sprint teams had in mind, the two groups ride the same pace. If the breakaway slows down, the peloton slows done.

 

The general idea for the breakaway is to go as slow as possible, as long as it’s fast enough to prevent further attacks from the peloton. They were going plenty fast, it was the fastest stage in Tour de France history after all. They could have just waited for Slock, the peloton would have allowed that.

 

So what happened? Is Slock and his Lotto Intermarché team now so disliked that not only Caja Rural is feuding with them, but the entire peloton? Was the breakaway worried that Slock could actually win the stage? I really don’t know. They know, but they’re not telling me.

 

In the sprint, a mistake by one rider caused a mistake by another rider, which delivered the stage win to Søren Wærenskold. To be honest, the whole stage finale was a bit disorganized, mistakes were likely to happen. Cees Bol, Olav Kooij’s lead-out rider, was just the last rider to make a mistake. He went too hard for Kooij and had a gap on the peloton. Kooij thought: he might win the stage, I’ll let him go. Wærenskold thought: he’ll never win the stage, I’ll jump in his wheel.

 

Kooij was faster than Wærenskold, but too late. The fastest man does not always win the sprint. The fastest man today was Tim Merlier, but he also lost his lead-out man and was completely boxed in. Merlier can win a sprint from 15^th position, but not when there are riders on both sides and in front of him. He finished 15^th.  

 

The most combative rider of the day earns 2 points in our game. I forgot to include the results table for that category when I prepared today’s points. I saw that Anthon Charmig was the most combative rider and I thought, surely nobody has him.

 

I was wrong: Team Valerie had picked him, the only one. That makes Charmig a slam dunk to pick as our focus rider of the day.

 

Charmig won a stage in the Tour of Oman in 2022, and stage 2 of what is now the Tour Auvergne – Rhône-Alpes; the former Dauphiné Libéré. He won that stage after going solo from of the breakaway for 12 kilometers. He was also given a yellow card for riding with his elbows on the handlebars.

 

Until a few years ago we had junior gearing in road cycling. Juniors were limited in the gear ratio, too big of a ratio was not allowed. I always told parents that rule existed to teach juniors that in cycling there are rules that exist for no reasonable cause. The junior gearing rule is gone, but now we outlaw elbows on handlebars. Okay.

 

He was the first to the top of both categorized climbs today: the Côte de Billonnière and the Côte de Billy-Chevannes. That earned him the combativity award today, he’ll start with the red bib tomorrow.

Spoiler alert: there are no changes in the standings today.

 

Team Josh took another stage win, thanks to Dorian Godon. Most points from the stage, most points overall, most riders in the Top-25 (six). Right behind them were Team Ansel. In third we find Team Charles, slightly ahead of Team Tadej who still has most points from classifications. Only a point behind them were Team Hugo.

 

In sixth were Team Oliver, then Team Amalia in seventh and Team Caleb and Team Matthew shared eighth place. The others missed the boat today.

 

Team Grace in tenth, Team Wesley in eleventh, Team Cameron in twelfth.

 

Stage 12 will also be bunch sprint, probably the last of the 2026 Tour de France — there’s no grand finale on the Champs-Elysées anymore. There’s a ridiculous hairpin turn halfway into the sprint zone. But if we get through there safely, the lead-out trains still have 2,500 meters to organize themselves. The fastest man in the peloton should win on Thursday: Tim Merlier.
