Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!
STAGE Grade: A
I rate today’s stage an A. Packed with racing action, beautiful scenery, I can’t really say there was a lot of general classification implications — but the race was won because of general classification tactics. In a way. I’ll explain below.
Route: 5/5 GC: 2/5 Tactics: 4/5 Sprint: 4/5 Surprises: 4/5
Another day with a complicated breakaway. The first one looked reasonable, but it had JP Lopéz. I’d forgotten about that kid, but as soon as he was in that breakaway, I had two thoughts: the sprinter teams are not going to let that man ride in the breakaway. What if they don’t bring him back? And: Movistar Team is looking for a way to win this stage.
I was right about the former. The peloton decided to bring the breakaway back early, and a second attempt was made. This time, much more palatable to the sprinter teams. I thought it was done. Five man in the breakaway, they ride almost but not quite to the finish, Johnatan Milan wins the sprint.
But completely inexplicably, the peloton changed their mind. After a little over an hour of racing, the peloton overwhelmed the breakaway — who must not have believed what they saw. A series of attacks followed, it was all pretty chaotic, and then a second breakaway formed. Half of that breakaway was the original breakaway. Only in Italy!
This time, even I did not believe the breakaway would last. It didn’t. Movistar indeed wanted to win the stage. They pulled hard and broke the sprinters. The first time, they came back. The second time, over the Bric Berton, a category three climb, Milan, Paul Magnier, Casper van Uden and a few others had been gapped by 40 seconds. I was certain they’d come back, but Movistar kept riding hard and dropped the sprinters for good.
Their plan was to launch Orluis Aular. It was a good plan, but Alec Segaert had a better plan. He had read the road book: three kilometers before the finish was one final right turn. His plan: attack just before that turn, then ride as hard as you can.
He passed the almost complete Team Visma – Lease-a-Bike. They were there to make sure Jonas Vingegaard’s general classification was safe. I told you the GC would impact the race today. Segaert came around all of them, dove into the final corner, and nobody who had any interest in coming after him was in a position to do so. Visma was leading the peloton, and they weren’t trying to bring Segaert back.
A very smart way to win a race. He still had to ride his legs off, and he did, but it was a thinking man’s victory in stage 12 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia.
This was not our best day in this Giro. We missed the boat the first time, we were in the breakaway the second time, but then missed out on everything after that. Andrea Misfud, the Maltese rider, salvaged our day by finishing 15th overall. That’s 2 UCI points and 276 euros.

Spoiler alert: there were no changes in the standings after today’s stage.
It was another small-points kind of day. A three-way tie at the top — Team Charles, Team Sam, and Team Tadej sharing the top step on the podium. Next were Team Ansel, followed by Team Grace. The next gaggle were Team Amalia and Team Hugo, and Team Felix were eighth today.
Friday, stage 13. I can’t think of a reason that Jhonatan Narváez would not win. It is certainly a stage very suited to Giulio Ciccone, but the peloton will just not let him get away. Unless Jonas Vingegaard decides to go all Tadej Pogačar on us, Narváez will win a fourth stage in the 2026 Giro d’Italia.
