Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!
STAGE Grade: B+
I rate today’s stage an B+. Other than beautiful scenery and the continued hope that maybe something unexpected would happen, there wasn’t much reason to watch today’s race. No changes in the general classification — the only reason I’ve awarded three stars is because nothing did happen. Everyone fought like crazy and the outcome was a stalemate. But there was a battle for the general classification.
Route: 5/5 GC: 3/5 Tactics: 2/5 Sprint: 1/5 Surprises: 3/5
When Team Visma – Lease-a-Bike slowed down the chase to the breakaway on the first climb to Piancavallo it was clear that Jonas Vingegaard had no interest in the Maglia Azzurra. That made for a less interesting race. The whole group stayed together and then Bart Lemmen paced the group until Vingegaard launched himself. To win the stage. As predicted as option B.
Just before that, first Sepp Kuss and then Davide Piganzoli dropped back. Kuss, I assume, trying to preserve his energy. If Vingegaard was going to win this stage himself, Kuss wasn’t needed. Do as little as possible, especially the day after a big effort.
Piganzoli’s collapse surprised me. There went his chance to win the Maglia Blanca.
Afonso Eulálio disappeared into the distance and I thought: how disappointing. But Piganzoli, I don’t know how, he came back. All the way to Eulálio’s wheel. A monstrous recovery — but now what? He needed to take a minute on Eulálio. Perhaps he can beat him in a sprint, but that’s about it.
In the end, he tried to drop Eulálio but he couldn’t do it. Collapsed, Eulálio then attacked himself, and Piganzoli lost the battle by ten seconds.
There were races like this up and down the mountain. Thymen Arensman seemed to lose fourth place to Derek Gee-West, but no: Egan Bernal helped him back to Gee and he held onto fourth place.
Giulio Ciccone finished 34th, but he had secured the Maglia Azzurra the first time they did this climb. Even zero points would have done it, with Vingegaard not chasing the breakaway, but he did it with a flourish: the first from the peloton to summit.
Ludovico Crescioli was in the peloton when Ciccone secured his KOM title. Impressive, but he did even better: sprinting with Ciccone and Igor Arrieta for the KOM points, he and Arrieta kept going on the descent. The classic move, act as if you’re sprinting for points, then keep going to drop the others. Ciccone didn’t care, he went back to the group. But Arrieta and Crescioli caught the breakaway in the valley.
Crescioli then even attacked. Dropped the others, and although Andreas Leknessund caught him, he was the last rider dropped by Vingegaard. Wouldn’t surprise me if our friend won the Combattività award.
At the finish he was 12th, just three minutes behind. He is now 27th in the general classification. That doesn’t help Polti – VisitMalta, but: Crescioli is out of a contract after this year. A good showing here can either help him get a better contract with Polti or, even better, he can follow the likes of Davide Piganzoli or Giulio Pellizzari. Keep an eye on the young Italian during the off-season.

Spoiler alert: there were no changed in the standings today.
Team Ansel took another win, as they have been strong in the mountains. Most points from the stage, most points from classifications, most points overall, most riders in the Top-25 (nine).
Behind them were Team Grace in second; team Hugo in third; and Team Charles in fourth. The teams were spread out like the riders on the mountain today. In fifth were Team Tadej, then Team Felix in sixth, Team Amalia in seventh, and Team Sam in eighth.
It looks like Team Grace have done enough. With the Final Standings bonus points, their lead will be 22 points. There’s no conceivable way that Team Ansel can gain 22 points on Sunday. Congratulations, Team Grace, winning one of the closest AAVC Grand Tour Games ever.
Speaking of winning: stage 21 will be won by Jonathan Milan. How can he not? Of course Paul Magnier is faster, and of course everyone wants Dylan Groenewegen win it for those Unibet Rose Rockets. But it’s the last chance for the Italian to win in Italy — surely, he’ll grab it. He survived well enough in the mountains. It’s not a Giro without a Jonathan Milan win. It will be a Milan kind of day in Rome.
