Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!

STAGE Grade: C+

I rate today’s stage a C+. High expectations turned into a big dud. Yes, nice for Nicolas Prodhomme. But this stage was supposed to shake up the general classification and that didn’t happen. The route was scenic enough, a few glimpses of the Matterhorn. But I’m subtracting points for just not working out as a bike race.

Route: 2/5         GC: 1/5             Tactics: 2/5       Sprint: 1/5         Surprises: 2/5

Tie an arm behind his back and he could have won today: Isaac del Toro. The strongest rider in the peloton today. He attacked as late as possible: not at all. Del Toro. Prodhomme won the race and Richard Carapaz lost his chance to win the 2025 Giro d’Italia today.

Attack as late as possible. But before the others. Prodhomme did that, but of course he couldn’t know UAE Team Emirates – XRG would squeeze the brakes and allow him the victory. I wonder if Antonio Tiberi and Carlos Verona could have gone with him, if they had been told the peloton wouldn’t chase them down. Verona looked cooked. Tiberi? He finished ninth. Perhaps he could have done better.

Louis Meintjes, Carlos Verona, and Damien Howson were all penalized for sticky bottles. The practice of hanging on to the team car a little longer than strictly necessary to receive a bottle. Prodhomme must have taken twenty bottles in the final kilometers, but each time he held on just short enough. No penalty. Cycling is … whatever skill it is to judge just how long to hold on to the bottles and gels handed to you. Those seconds of freewheeling do add up, well done Prodhomme and team.

How disappointing was stage 19? The GPM line for the final climb, to Antagnod, was exactly at the bottom of the four-person chairlift there. The TV did everything possible to make sure we couldn’t see it. Correction: I couldn’t see it. And I tried very hard.

Antagnod is called a ski resort, but most of the skiing is in the Montarosa area just past the finish line, in Champoluc. There, you can take a gondola and then a chair lift to a white-knuckle two-mile black run, and from there you can ride and ski all the way to Alagna Valsesia, ten miles and two valleys away. There’s also a plan to build a lift in the other direction, to Breuil-Cervinia, and then you can ski around the Matterhorn and to Zermatt. But none of that was on TV today, so I’m not mentioning it here, either.

Alessandro Tonelli was in the breakaway for us. And he gained important points in the traguardo volante competition, winning the sprint in Châtillon uncontested. He’s now 11 points behind, it’s possible to get that back tomorrow or on Sunday.

But he was dropped from the breakaway before the breakaway counted. For the fuga competition, breakaway kilometers are counted for groups of ten or smaller. Tonelli was in the breakaway with 24. Shortly after the sprint, as the climb began, the group became smaller and smaller. Then, with 68.8 kilometers to go, Tonelli was dropped. He was out of the breakaway. Couldn’t hold on, when thirteen others still could

Prodhomme stayed away for 116 kilometers. Tonelli needed 50. Even Bart Lemmen earned 70 kilometers. I’m sure Tonelli’s team boss expected more.

Davide Piganzoli did the thing: he held on as long as he could, then finished 15th. Together with Tudor Pro Cycling Team rider Florian Stork, at least he had company this time.

Giulio Pellizzari crashed in the final 60 meters, he finished 12th and given the same time as the others in his group.

Afonso Eulálio is one of those riders I had never heard of, but he had earned 19 points for Team Noah.

Spoiler alert: there were no changes in the standings today.

More wealth for Team Tadej, who are set to be in first place from day 1 and win it. I haven’t kept records of previous games, but that seems to be rare. Today they got most points from the stage, most points from classifications, most points overall, most riders in the Top-25 (eight).

Second place today, inasmuch as it matters, Team Joshua. Then Team Ansel followed by Team Charles, Team Katja, and Team Oliver. Seventh place was for Team Thomas.

The others missed the boat today. Team Sam in eighth, Team Grace in ninth, Team Noah in tenth, Team Amalia in eleventh, Team Hugo in twelfth.

Stage 20 on Saturday will be the decider. There’s no real reason for the GC contenders not to attack. Unless nobody wants to win the 2025 Giro d’Italia. If you don’t attack on the 18.5 kilometer climb (partly gravel), at 9.2%, to Colle delle Finestre, then you don’t want to win the Giro.

Richard Carapaz must attack, and he should win. Unless he attacks too late, then Isaac del Toro will win it his damn self. I’ve been wrong about del Toro all month, there’s no reason to believe I’ll be right this time.
