Hello, Giro d’Italia Gamers!
STAGE Grade: C+
I rate today’s stage a C+. Every aspect of this race was at best mediocre. The route went through the rice paddies, that’s always cool. And the race winner was a surprise. But overall, we could have skipped today’s stage.
Route: 2/5 GC: 1/5 Tactics: 2/5 Sprint: 1/5 Surprises: 3/5
One, two, three: I count this the third transition stage in a row and finally it behaved like one. There were early skirmishes to create the right breakaway. Filippo Ganna tried his best to be in it, the finish today in Verbania is where he was born. But the peloton wouldn’t let him. Even a late effort from Ben Turner to bridge Ganna to what was the decisive breakaway failed. Ben Turner! Cycling is a team effort.
That decisive breakaway, fifteen riders strong, worked together well and between their efforts and the peloton’s decision to take another rest day, a ten-minute gap developed quickly.
Alberto Bettiol. Winner of the 2019 Ronde van Vlaanderen, he looked poised to become a factor in the one-day classics. A future world champion. But his star faded and I did not see him coming today. And neither did anyone else. Personally, I thought Jasper Stuyven had the best chance to win from that breakaway. Or Toon Aerts, he has the explosive cyclocross legs to do what Bettiol did.
So Bettiol surprised me. As did the absence of Jhonatan Narváez. He was in an earlier attempt at a breakaway, but apparently the peloton had had enough of Narváez’ stage winning.
Two Team Polti-VisitMalta riders in the breakaway. Diego Pablo Sevilla took points in the sprint, he won the KOM sprint, and he added to his lead in the fuga competition. When he won that KOM sprint I thought that wouldn’t matter, but it ended up giving him third place in the daily KOM competition. That’s 200 euros!
Mirco Maestri was in the breakaway too, and both scored UCI points and prize money at the finish. We may be experiencing the best performance by our focus team since we started following them. Polti!

Yet again, it was a small-points kind of day. Team Hugo won the stage because he, unlike the rest of us, had not forgotten about Alberto Bettiol. Everyone else followed closely behind and there were no changes in the standings.
Second were Team Ansel, then Team Grace in third. Team Amalia and Team Charles shared fourth. Team Sam in sixth, Team Tadej in seventh, and Team Felix in eighth.
On Saturday we are headed into the mountains. The finish in Pila is at one of the middle stations of ski lift that takes you from the town of Aosta all the way to the top of the Pila itself. The race itself won’t go that high, but it’s still a category 1 climb — 16.6 km at 7%. That will be the third category 1 climb of the day. The first one right at the start.
It should be a good race, with an early breakaway to be xepcted. This is a good day for the likes of Giulio Ciccone — but he keeps being thwarted whenever he is in a breakaway. It depends on how close Jonas Vingegaard and the others will be at the start of the final climb. Vingegaard in good form should win the stage. But you know what, if Alberto Bettiol can win stage 13, then Aleksandr Vlasov can win stage 14.
