I rate today’s stage a B. Tadej Pogačar won the stage, we all knew it, whatever tactics did or didn’t happen, and a few riders in his wake shook up the general classification. It’s possible there was a great race going on in the background but with Pogačar an area code ahead of everyone else, it’s hard to tell.

At one point, I really thought Tadej Pogačar was struggling. He wasn’t smiling the way he normally does, listening to iTunes on his airpods or whatever else he does when he’s on Zone 2. Clearly I was wrong, but I believe Jonas Vingegaard thought it, too.

 

Acting as if you’re dead is an important skill for a pro cyclist. I didn’t think Pogačar needed it. I know he doesn’t need it. I don’t know if he has it, acting anything other than being himself is a skill Pogačar doesn’t seem to have. So I don’t know what happened.

 

The point is that when Vingegaard saw that, he decided to ride tempo from the front of the group. Pogačar right behind him. This is a mistake. There is never a reason to give Pogačar a free ride to the front.

 

But as I was watching it, I couldn’t figure out a better way. Vingegaard doesn’t have the explosive power to attack and drop Pogačar. So don’t do that. He could let Pogačar do the work, but then Pogačar finds that magic moment, attacks, and leaves everyone behind. So it’s not easy. Repeated efforts to slow down and speed up — kind of what Isaac del Toro was doing in the 2025 Giro d’Italia. Of course, those tactics cost del Toro the race.

 

If we overlook the fact that Vingegaard can’t beat Pogačar, then riding in the front still makes no sense. He’s giving Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas a free ride, too. And Seixas was able to attack, gain a dozen seconds on Vingegaard, and now we have a real battle for second place.

 

A race within a race: who will finish second. A race within a race: who will win the green jersey? Even today that race was fought hard. The intermediate sprint was only 12 kilometers from the start — it had to be, with all the climbing that followed. Twelve kilometers of sprinting. It was Biniam Girmay’s team who had the best lead-out. They passed Mads Pedersen who seemed uninterested. Then Edward Planckaert came with Jasper Philipsen, and then Pedersen reacted. A bit of a shoulder-barge; that’s three days in a row now for the Dane. Some riders just get away with these things.

 

Girmay’s lead-out was so good that Jake Stewart completely dropped Girmay. I thought he was sprinting to win it, but at 200 meters he looked over his shoulder and seeing no Girmay, he sat up. At that point Philipsen was at full speed, he had time to look over his shoulder before crossing the line. Pedersen took second — this green jersey battle will go all the way to Paris.

 

Anton Charmig, our earlier focus rider, finished over the time limit today. He was involved in Thursday’s crash that I glossed over, got dropped early and rode by himself for almost the entire stage. The cut-off was 40 minutes, he took almost an hour. And by the way, I think I called him Swiss the other day — he’s Danish. Only Danes and Norwegians ride for Uno-X Mobility.

 

Egan Bernal was picked by only one team: Team Chris. He’s our focus rider, then. Thymen Arensman and Bernal are racing both the Giro and the Tour this year. Bernal was racing for Arensman in the Giro. In the Tour, Arensman has not shown anything. Today he was in the breakaway but sadly, a puncture cost him. When the team car finally showed up, his bike was on the left side of the roof.

 

So now we know: Arensman is not Netcompany INEOS’ lead rider. There are two bikes on the right side of the car: one for the number one rider, one for the number two rider. The mechanic sits on the right, so those bikes are the first he can grab when the car stops. Arensman’s bike was on the left. Seconds lost.

 

Either Bernal had two bikes on the right, or Kévin Vauqelin had the other — but INEOS had no confidence in Arensman today.

 

Sad for Arensman, who gave up the chase. He dropped back to the chase group, where he found Bernal. He rode as hard as he could for Bernal, then dropped back for good. Bernal finished fourteenth today, he improved one position in the general classification: 11^th. His bike will be on the right again on Sunday.

Spoiler alert: Team Tadej took second place away from Team Josh, but everything else remained the same today.

 

Team Ansel took another win; most points from the stage, a tie for most points from classifications, most points overall, most riders in the Top-25 (eleven): they are increasing their stranglehold on the game.

 

Team Tadej were second, the other team with most points from classifications. In third were Team Hugo and only in fourth place did we find Team Josh.

 

Team Charles were fifth and the eternally tied teams Caleb and Matthew shared sixth place today.

 

Team Oliver were eight, Team Amalia ninth, and Team Wesley tenth. Two teams missed the boat today: Team Grace in eleventh and Team Cameron in twelfth.

 

On Sunday we’ll repeat today’s stage in a lighter version. We’ll leave the Vosges mountains, cross through the Jura mountain range and end up in the Alps, just skirting Switzerland. It’ll look pretty. The final climb is to Brison, 11.3 km at 9%. We write down the winner: Tadej Pogačar.

 

But keep an eye on Paul Seixas. As young as he is, I see him getting stronger during the 2026 Tour de France. He can’t beat Pogačar, nobody can, but I expect him to mount an attack against Jonas Vingegaard.
