"Once I thought I made a mistake, but I was wrong." - Charles M. Schulz
These words were plastered on the wall of my 8th grade math classroom. The first time I read this my 8th grade mind was confused, but I grew to understand it and appreciate the humor.
Lacking confidence can keep many DIYers from working on projects. They are afraid of making a mistake and they are disappointed when their project doesn't turn out how they envisioned or what it looks like on Pinterest.
Can you relate?
After you spend money, time and energy on a project there is a lot on the line to make a project right.
How do build confidence in your DIY skills?
Although there are several things you can do to boost your DIY confidence, I will cover just one here.
Step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
Maybe it's your first time using a hammer. For someone else it's their first time cutting a 45 degree angle with a miter saw and for another it's installing a new front door.
Even if you make a mistake your confidence will grow because you learn what not to do. And besides learning a new skill you become more self-reliant, which again boosts your confidence.
How can you put learning new DIY skills into practice?
Practice your DIY skills on scrap wood projects. Scrap wood projects are generally low risk; meaning they involve less time and money therefore less pressure to get it right.
You can create awesome scrap wood projects that add beauty to your home and that are functional.
Here are some recent projects that I did in the Build From Scrap challenge:
You can build these projects, do a scrap wood projects search on Pinterest or Google, or come up with your own project that is a solution to a problem in your own home.
What new skill or tool will you try? What project will you do next?
I promise your confidence will increase when you step out of your comfort zone and push through the fear of making a mistake.
Enjoy your build!
