1. AASU Community Retreat

The annual summer community retreat hosted by the AASU will be taking
place on Tuesday, August 24th from 2-7 PM at Paint Branch Park!

What better way to end the summer than by spending it with various
executive board members in the UMCP APA community, including your AASU
e-board? Come on out for some bonding and discussion! After all, we
are a COMMUNITY and we have here an opportunity to come together as a
community so that we can be there for each other during the school
year. This is the time to make new friends in other organizations and
to learn about what the rest of the APA community has planned for the
year.

General Assembly members are HIGHLY recommended to come, as this will
be a great chance for you to get to know your fellow GA members that
you will be interacting with this upcoming school year (the current
AASU constitution requires GA member attendance, but we do understand
if you can't make it).

So come out! It's a good way to kick off the year and you will come
away from the retreat more familiar with your fellow APA leaders and
with a better understanding of what the 2010 2011 year will look like
for the APA community.

2. Freshmen Welcome

Come out to La Plata Beach on September 8th from 3-6 PM! This event
will introduce incoming freshmen to how they can get involved within
the APA community on campus, but all students are welcome to attend!
All UMCP APA organizations will have a table set up to answer any
questions.

3. New UMD President Dr. Wallace Loh

Dr. Wallace D. Loh has been appointed the new president of the
University of Maryland, College Park! He is currently the executive
vice president and provost of The University of Iowa. His appointment
as president of UMD will be effective November 1, 2010.

4. OMSE’s Unity Welcome

The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education is hosting the annual
Unity Welcome on Thursday, September 30, 2010. The Unity Welcome
provides an opportunity to welcome and introduce the campus community
to the wide range of multi-ethnic student organizations on campus and
the resources and opportunities for academic, personal, and
professional development within the OMSE office in a social and
festive manner. During Unity Welcome there is a multicultural resource
fair and performances from fraternities, sororities and other cultural
organizations on campus.

5. SAALT Introduces Lead the Change 2010!

On the occasion of our 10th anniversary, SAALT is proud to introduce a
new leadership development event that provides community members with
skills and resources to become effective community leaders for social
change. This year, we are offering this initiative in two locations:

Lead the Change

Sunday, October 3, 2010

Lead the Change will offer South Asian activists, advocates, and
allies the opportunity to engage with leaders in their communities and
participate in workshops to build skills in the arenas of
communications, project management, organizing, and public speaking.
Lead the Change is open to Be the Change volunteers as well as all
community members. Registration will begin on August 6th!

Be the Change 2010
Be the Change is a national day of service, coordinated by South Asian
Americans Leading Together (SAALT), that is held on campuses and in
cities across the country. The event is based on Mahatma Gandhi's
inspirational quote, "You must be the change you wish to see in the
world," and provides opportunities for South Asians to give back to
their communities. In 2009, almost 3,000 people contributed 6000
service hours in 70 cities and campuses across the country.
Want to Join the Movement?
Host a Be the Change event in your city or on your campus on Saturday,
October 2nd by signing up here! Check out all the cities and campuses
that have already joined the movement!

Our core cities this year are: Washington DC, New York City, San Jose,
San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. We also
welcome other cities to hold Be the Change events.
