Council Statement on President Obama's Affordable Care Act
The AAPI Leadership Council is grateful that President Obama has
championed the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act over
the last two years and is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled to
uphold the fundamental tenants of the law.
The benefits to the AAPI community of the Affordable Care Act are clear:
over 2.7 million AAPIs will now have access to free preventive services,
more than 97,000 AAPIs up to age 26 will be able to remain on their
parent’s insurance plans, and nearly 5.5 million AAPIs are now free from
concerns about reaching their lifetime coverage limits.
We applaud the tremendous progress that President Obama has made in
advancing the health of the AAPI community, and we look forward to
additional benefits to come as the law fully takes effect in 2014.

Leadership Council and Governor O'Malley at a Dream Act fundraiser on July
16
One year ago, the Maryland General Assembly passed and Governor Martin
O’Malley signed in to law the Dream Act, which will permit students to be
eligible for in-state tuition, regardless of their parents’ immigration
status, provided that they pay state taxes and graduate from high school.
The law—which aims to provide many children of immigrants with new
opportunities to gain a fuller education, better jobs, and to help build a
stronger, more productive Maryland economy—will benefit many ethnic
minorities, including the AAPI community throughout the state.
Unfortunately, critics have coalesced to oppose providing tax-paying,
academically successful students from immigrants families with in-state
tuition to Maryland colleges and universities. Opponents have sought
enough signatures to bring the law to a referendum vote in the November
election.
Opposition groups are expected to spend millions of dollars in the coming
months attacking the Dream Act. Governor O’Malley is fighting to protect
this law from repeal, but to do so, he needs your help. He is organizing
his first fundraiser to support the education of Maryland’s students:

Council is Looking for Student Interns
The AAPI Leadership Council is seeking interns to engage the Asian
American community in political activism. As an official outreach wing of
the Maryland Democratic Party and the Maryland Obama campaign, the Council
offers full and part-time internships to students interested in grassroots
political organization within the AAPI community. We are looking for
energetic, self-motivated interns for the positions of: Regional Field
Director, Administrative Assistant, Development Assistant, and
Communications Administrator. The individuals selected will build
volunteer teams, assist in infrastructure-building for various Committees
and staff, facilitate meetings, and coordinate activities. Interns should
be interested in the political process. Organizing or political experience
is ideal but not necessary. Interns will gain skills in political
organization through working with leaders of the Asian American community.
The ideal intern is ready to adapt to the needs of the organization but
also take ownership of their work, as opportunities to take more
responsibility will become available.
