All--posting this for Elizabeth Hines with the Pittock Mansion.  Can you help?
--Rena Lawrence, Log Cabin Village (Fort Worth, TX)

My name is Elizabeth Hines and I am the curatorial and exhibits intern here at the Pittock Mansion, a historic home museum in Portland, Oregon. I am tasked with researching the best small museum/historic home practice for the materials used in making exhibit labels for paintings. We have a collection of Eliza Barchus landscapes, and we are creating display labels to go with them. I was wondering if you knew of the common materials other historical homes or small museums use for their labels, and perhaps their process for creating them?

Jessa Krick here from the Rosen House at Caramoor. Many of our paintings here are labeled with label holders like these:
We use printed paper labels on cardstock. These are easy to design, as well as change as needed (whether discovering errors or updating information). The label holders are not heavy, so they are easy to mount and move if needed. Although they look modern, it is not incongruous in the historic site setting. Just be conscientious of font size for ease of reading, especially if the room is dim.
