Are there enough people involved in this for torrenting to make sense? Probably not, but I would definitely share this in that way - aard is a great tool. I went ahead and created some torrents of the english wiki files in my client (not that anyone will ever download them). ----------------I don't suppose multiple copy.com accounts, wuala.com, etc could be sourced from simultaneously? You might have to hack the .aar files into smaller/standardized bits and have a client software to sort such a thing out (i.e. too much difficulty).

I wondered the aforementioned because my latest download attempts using some of the main links (which utilized wuala.com) on aarddict.org were a big waste of time (i.e. they were slow, failed halfway through - couldn't be restarted, etc), but I found the files by "MHBraun" (via copy.com) did download decently.

Oh, hmm. I see there is something about "seedboxes" and cloud-torrenting. I'm not up to speed on what can be done these days.

I am not quite shure what you are looking for.
Having a torrent would not increase the download speed AFAIK.

Looking for smaller parts of the wiki is possible. Is this for download only, or for your daily use of the wikis? Actually, the parts are split to take care of FAT file system restrictions. Which size are you looking for?

>>> not quite shure what you are looking for.
I'm was just tossing ideas out - hopefully so that the same problems that happened to me don't happen to others (or me again in the future) - if that's feasible.

>>> a torrent would not increase download speed
The download speed itself wasn't the biggest obstacle. It was the random stopping and inability to resume (with wuala.com) that really killed progress. I was ending up with a lot of incomplete files, like 800mb or 1.7gb out of 2.0gb.

>>> Is this for download only, or for your daily use of the wikis?
Hmm, I downloaded the wikis and I use the files regularly, yes. I would also upload them via torrent software if people utilized it.

>>> Which size are you looking for?
The 2gb size worked fine for me when I could get it downloaded without any kind of random/mysterious interruption. I only did with the files hosted by copy.com.

That's the good thing about torrents. I don't think they'd be as likely to display as "finished" when they weren't, nor would they be unable to resume downloading.

I have no clue how to set up a torrent for files which I host in copy. A torrent from my private server does not make sense as the upload speed is low.
Probably you may set up a torrent to make the files available?

I tried distributing with torrents a while ago, but very few people were seeding, so it didn't work very well. Maybe it's worth it to revisit this, especially now that magnet links are widely supported in bt clients and trackerless torrents are possible. Personal cloud storage services like Wuala and Copy are great, but expecting them to reliably support large popular downloads is probably unrealistic.

Instead of torrent, BT Sync or one of the open source alternatives could be used. It is possible to integrate BT Sync directly into the application.
By default, sync would only be enabled for a single folder where the dictionaries are located and if the device is connected via wlan. The app has the option to lookup which files are available and download those from other users. A server could be used simultanously to distribute less common data. I think it is also possible to combine this with dropbox.

I don't think syncing in general is a suitable approach for distributing dictionaries - large, infrequently updated binaries which people want to have on their mobile devices which only ever need to go one way. I think trying to "sync" will create more problems than it will solve. BT Sync being closed source is out of question. I am not aware of any viable open source alternatives, but regardless of that, downloading files is a completely separate concern from using them, trying to build a hybrid dictionary/download manager application is not something I'm interested in.

Try this magnet link:

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:9ac9c4cde12c076e0bcd45ebba173bccd803fe5b&dn=enwiktionary-20140221.aar

I just started seeding, not sure how long it will take to propagate...
